JEREMY Smith openly admits he never wanted to leave Cronulla but put his family first in making the decision to link up with the Newcastle Knights.
But don't think for one minute past loyalties will mean anything to the Kiwi Test forward when he takes on his former teammates for the first time at Tamworth tonight.
In what shapes as a mouth-watering pre-season match-up, Smith will go head-to-head with good mate and another of the game's toughest forwards, Paul Gallen, at Scully Park. Both have been named at lock in their lineups.
It might be a trial but there is plenty to suggest the clash will have all the intensity of an NRL game as players from both sides position themselves to be part of the 17 for their respective NRL season openers in a fortnight.
Smith, hand-picked by coach Wayne Bennett to put some much-needed steel into the Knights pack, provided a glimpse of what he brings to the table against South Sydney in Coffs Harbour last weekend.
During a 40-minute stint, he left Bunnies hooker Issac Luke gasping for air after a big hit and found himself on report for upending Dave Tyrrell in a tackle.
Defensively, he was everything Bennett knew he would be. Rival coach Shane Flanagan knows better than anyone the influence Smith can have.
It's why they were so reluctant to let him go to Newcastle when he requested a release on compassionate grounds.
"I would have loved to have stayed. I didn't want to leave,'' Smith said.
"I've got a lot of respect for Shane and all the support staff and boys there and I think the club is really going places.
"But I've got three young kids and we needed some help. My wife's father lives up this way so family came first. You have to keep the missus happy.''
Gallen is likely to be eased back into action by Flanagan after the Sharks skipper missed the All-Stars game in Brisbane a few weeks ago because of an on-going quadriceps injury.
The Sharks say they won't risk Luke Lewis in the game while Todd Carney will also be a spectator in Tamworth tonight as he fully recovers from the snapped achilles he suffered in last season's final series.
Chad Townsend will partner Jeff Robson in the halves. Centre Ben Pomeroy is another scratching because of injury.
In the starting pack, Andrew Fifita and Chris Heighington are back from All-Stars duty and will play in their only trial for the Sharks after missing the Manly game.
Bennett appears to have all but settled on his starting squad with the same 13 who took on Souths again selected for this game.
Meanwhile, players from the Knights and the Sharks have spent the past week spreading the rugby league gospel in the Tamworth region.
The Knights made a special trip to Coonabarabran mixing with school kids and donating a cheque for $13,800 to the Mayor's Bushfire Appeal
