The Sharks have announced the signing of Newcastle Knights utility player Dustin Cooper to a two-year deal.

The 25 year-old Cooper, who stands an imposing 194cm tall and weighs in at around 103kgs, can cover a number of positions including centre, fullback, wing, five eighth, lock and second row.

Sharks CEO Greg Pierce had no preconceptions about where he would fit into the Cronulla side but had no doubt Cooper would be a valuable addition and would definitely add to the depth of the Sharks squad.

“He is a good strong player who has shown he can more than capably cover a number of positions at NRL level,” Pierce said. “There were a number of rival clubs showing interest in Dustin but we invited him down and he was impressed by the area and by the set up at the club.”

Prior to joining the Knights in 2005, Cooper played for the Melbourne Storm. He has played 31 NRL games, scoring 12 tries and kicking two goals.

Cooper originally hails from Murgon in the Wide Bay region of Queensland. He will join the likes of Craig Stapleton, who was outstanding for the Panthers against the Sharks last week, Josh Hannay, Fraser Anderson, Paul Stephenson and Michael Greenfield as one of the new faces at the club in 2007.

woohoo! (sarcastic)
i actually thought we may start to play with two centres next year (with bailey leaving) but NOOOOOOOO.
another back rower that will no doubt end up as a starting centre.

If he actually plays in the forward pack he will go pretty good.
a good buy to try and cover for hilder's loss i think.
but do we actually have anyone that can cover hooker?

what a relief we signed dustin cooper...phew thought we were in trouble next year without him. Clearly i'm being sarcastic. This isn't gonna turn us into a premiership threat. Really i don't know why management even bother. I think we just sign players because other clubs are interested...it alwasy seems to be our claim that they will be good players....hey blah blah had blah teams chasing him, he must be great. Am i impressed with this gain...clearly not

Fantastic..... another fringe first grader that we are planning to turn into a star!!!! With the coaching talent we have this should be a piece od P.I.S.S.

Is there a policy to never sign an established first grader???? And dont come at me with Hannay and Stapleton.... Hannay has spent of the year in reserve grade and Stapleton was just looking for $100 more than he was getting at Penriff! This is a joke.... we are a bits and pieces team already and just keep replacing decent players (like Bailey) with average ones! Pathetic
