A number of factors led to a very bad start to 2002 by Cronulla, including getting used to a new coach, a new flat attacking style, and an injury to key player David Peachey. At the time the Sharks had a shocking winning rate when Peachey was absent.

This game was infamous for the replacement of half-back Brett Kimmorley by Preston Campbell during the second half, after repeated chanting of Campbell's name by the crowd.
