Am I right in thinking the fact that they are talking Meninga Lockyer, players of sludges era are now no chance of getting acknowledge as immortals?.

I don't so, but they made an awful mess of announcing Joey so soon

The reason I support the Sharks today. He was an absolutely top shelf player, streets ahead of Meninga. In his era, I remember centres being the game breakers; the excitement only really ramped up when the ball was sent wide. The Sharks were blessed to have Sludge out there ready to weave his magical way to the try line. I can't remember who said it - one of his peers - but where others ran across the turf, he skated. Absolute grace at top pace.

Re his immortal potential... on ability alone, no question. Attack, defence, goal kicking; there was nothing he couldn't do and do damned well. That said, I don't think it will ever happen. The media attention in the modern game elevates players to superstar status while our memories of truly great players past simultaneously fade.

Re his relationships with his peers... I've only heard positives. Les Boyd - Les Boyd - cried when told of his passing.

That was a tough day for me, too. RIP Sludge.

Now I think I'll watch that vid.

Couldn't find an official thread for him, but tomorrow will be 15 years since his passing

I remember the day vividly.
I was at work and went all pale and felt sick when I first heard the news.
Sludge was the reason for this “base of the mountains Westy” following the Sharks.

Sad sad day.
