I see a lot of comments on this forum from time to time about how many posters on here were too young to see Steve Rogers live.

You may have seen this video before but I thought I’d post it for those who haven’t.

Rogers had it all. Speed, swerve, step, a terrific defender, captain, goal kicker and prolific point scorer.
When I was a lad sitting on the hill area in the mid to late 70s, the sight of Rogers getting the ball brought the crowd to their feet.

They did so because they expected something to happen. And it usually did.

Enjoy.

You can talk about exciting Sharks players. None of them hold a candle to Rogers.

He was the best.

Absolutely idolised him as a kid.

Donnie was a year or two below me at Engadine West. I remember constantly bugging him hoping to get an invite to his house haha.

My uncle (married to dads sister) was sludges cousin, as a kid i idolised Mat, and was always getting signed jerseys from him etc. my parents used to tell me how much mat reminded them of steve when he played. Only ever saw sludge play on video, never in person.

He was my childhood hero.

Absolute magic.

Glad that video had him catching his own bomb to score. Not quite as spectacular as I remembered it as a kid but a great effort just the same.

Nice mate. No doubt Mat was a special player.

But having watched them both I think Sludge was better. Just.

If I grew up with Sludge no doubt I'd be saying the same, but he retired when I was a wee lad.

For me, Rat was my favourite player.

Just a pity my kid couldn't have Jack to watch

I seem to recall a final where he had blood all over him from a head cut and refused to come off... I’ve never seen so much blood on a jersey could only imagine what it would look like in HD now... those old enough to remember was it sludge im just a little hazy, rekon I was only 10-12 years old so 80-82 I’d think.

Towards the end of his career as 5/8 and lock, he was simply the best defender in the comp as well.

When were you at Engadine West? I was there from mid to late 60's, before my cattle tick parents moved me to St John Bosco.

Also, at one stage Steve lived about 200 metres from my house. Top bloke.

Sludge is the reason I supported the Sharks when I was a young fella living in St Mary's with all my mates mocking me.
It has been a love hate relationship over the years, but I'm glad I stuck by the Sharks and finally rewarded with a premiership.
R.I.P legend!

I'm the same vintage as you and it rings a bell but can't quite place it either.

I remember my Auntie, who lived in the shire, telling me that she saw Steve around all the time and that he was a lovely bloke. She also commented on how handsome he was haha.

Was also one of my favourite players growing up. When he moved to St George when I was 12, it was the first time I realised that players moved teams.

I use to run around with the number 3 on my back of my jersey and was always Steve Rogers in back yard footy. Absolutely devastated when he went to St George and tried to go with him. Couldn’t do it. My love for the sharks was too strong.

should he be named as an immortal?

my step father played with him in the super league in the 80's and said he was the best player he had ever seen. on his day could single handily destroy a team, which he did on numerous occasions.

unfortunately I rarely him much about him.

all the talk for the next immortal is lockyer, maninga etc.. is steve rogers (in your opinions) up there with those guys? or if not better?

Need to be very careful not to dilute the immortal concept, shouldn't be naming too many players imo.

Meninga will get in purely based on his numbers such as premierships, rep appearances and so on. Sludge was the better player though.

I wonder why Steve's name never seems to get discussed. Did he get along well with his peers when playing for Australia I wonder? You'd think that some of his compatriots would have lobbied for him by now.

Head and shoulders above a lot of people who get suggested.
