IronShark Junior Represents Australia (and the Sharks!) in the F1 In Schools World Championships
Just got back from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, where my oldest son was competing in the world championship of the F1 In Schools competition. For anyone who is interested, F1 In Schools is a worldwide race engineering competition that is run with the backing of Formula 1. It is designed to get kids interested in all fields of engineering, especially mechanical and aeronautical and over a million students from around the world take part in the hope of making the World Championship.
High school students from all around the world compete in teams of three to six in which they have to design, engineer and build scale race cars that are powered by compressed C02 canisters. The cars race down a twenty metre track and the overall is winner is the team that has the best engineered car, which is not always the fastest. Teams are judged on engineering, design, presentation and marketing, as well as race results.
My sons team, Rapid Racing from Engadine High, won the Australian Championships in the junior category (first time entrants). As a result, they were invited by F1 In Schools to compete in the World Championships. As there in no junior class at the worlds, they formed a collaboration team (Rapid Motion) with a German school to compete in Professional Class.
They boys were hoping to finish top ten in their first competition out of a field of thirty three teams. So we were all blown away when they came away with 4th in the world, as well as the winners of the Best Collaboration Team award! This is a massive achievement for a bunch of fourteen year olds from a Sutherland Shire public high school who were often competing with kids as old as 18. Throughout the competition, they represented their country with honour. Not only that, my son and I made sure we wore our Sharks gear at every opportunity!
Finally, I would like to send a massive thankyou to our very own Fitz and DrunkDazz. Both of them kindly sponsored the team by donating their time and expertise and were a massive part of them winning the Australian Champs, which got us to worlds. Fitz collaborated with the boys with his graphic design skills, helping them to create everything from the team logo to uniforms and pit design (where the car is displayed for judging). Whilst Dazz donated all the signwriting work to create the pit area, as well as stickers and promo gear. If you need any work done in these areas, I can't recommend these guys enough - get in touch with them via PM.
