I don't think we've got an experienced fullback option. At least 3 or 4 young blokes will be vying for the spot though so fingers crossed one stands up and makes it his for years to come.

Not sure we can bag Ricky on his recruitment in this area as there weren't any experienced fullbacks on the market apart from Hunt and that was never gonna happen.

Seeing that the poll on our potential centre pairing for next year is getting a good response, I'd like to see everyone's opinion on who our fullback should be next year.

Personally I could be swayed- I can see arguments for Orcher, Stapleton, Gardner and Kelly.

See how it goes but we might collate all this after a while and put together a Sharks Forever Choice 2010 lineup.

EDIT: Let me know if there's an obvious cadidate I haven't thought of and I'll add him to the poll.

Ahh actually there is no one in the list that is worthy of a 1st garde spot. Surley you are joking?

Stapo should start at fullback but I would like to see him play on the wing sometime through the year because when i saw him in the under 20s i thought he was brilliant playing there

I voted for Orcher just to swing the poll a little. I've always been relatively impressed with his performances at fullback in the lower grades. Stapleton will (rightfully) start the year at fullback, but I wouldn't be surprised if Orcher eventually gets a crack at the position during the year, especially given our sticky start to the season.

Stapo did a great job last year and given that he has just turned 20 he has lots of improvement in him. He is coming back from a knee injury and he will only get better. Now that he has played some 1st grade he will go from strength to stregnth.

Stapo will start the season out, BUT, personally I would like to see this position given to a player which is elusive, first and foremost (being Orcher or Kelly), not that it will happen.

Saying that I am happy with Stapo as well.

Ricky always picks the players which are better defensively but never really considers attack, we need some attacking options in the 1,6,7 & 9 positions.

1) Stapo, Orcher
6) Kelly
7) Barrett
9) Flanagan, Aiton

Surely this mix would score more points, really hope by the end of next season we are looking something like this.

Has to be Stapo as he has been the only fullback to come along and look like he can fill the spot. Kearney was better and i would have kept him personally but it is true that he was injured too often. Any of these other guys are untested and Stapo is our long-term option. However what worries me is that as soon as he had played a couple of games other teams knew about him and could take him out of the game relatively easily. Hopefully playing with a performing team and having some more experience will fix this.

Stapleton is the incumbent and must be favoured to start the season at fullback but I would like to see both Orcher and Kelly get their chance in the number one jersey at some stage - both very exciting prospects with speed to burn.

Personally I think first and foremost the absolutely imperative quality of a fullback is to be good and confident under the high ball.

The second is being good in defence.

Then the third would be the ability to gain metres when running it back from a kick.

Then you can worry about all the nice-to-haves like being an extra half, being a great offensive runner, and all that crap that people over rate today at the expense of the core fullback responsibilities.

Yeah i really agree with this, when Kelly is mentioned you cant help but think of the benefits of his ball playing ability and possibly an extra half out there which could really jump start our attack but you just cant forget that fullback is such an important position and all the great premiership sides like Manly, Melbourne and the Eels got as far as they did having an awesome fullback.

Speaking of defence that is another issue for Stapo. When a player breaks the line and its just them vs Slater or Stewart, normally the fullback will either stop them or slow them down so someone else can get them. When it is Stapo you know it will be a try. I am not saying this means he shouldnt be fullback as he is the best option but he still has alot of developing to do.

Personally, I don't really see Stapo as our long term option at fullback at this stage- he just isn't quick enough. MB, I reckon being safe under the high ball is an assumed skill for a fullback, not a priority- like a dummyhalf being able to pass both sides. They should just be that, otherwise they're not a fullback. Defence is good too... but Matt Bowen and numourous others have one games for their sides at fullback while being poor tacklers. And as Ramzy pointed out, Stapo's defence isn't exactly his best feature as it is.

I reckon Stapo probably deserves first shot, but long term I'd rather try him on the wing as a smart, tough, reasonably quick finisher outside Matt Wright. IMO the ideal situation (in that it would mean our backline was much stronger than it is now) would be to have Stapo as a long term utility back in the squad who covers centre/wing/fullback for us when injuries/rep footy intervene.

Orcher and Gardner are the genuine fullbacks in that list and I hope we're trying to mould them into long term options for us, even if they don't get runs in 2010.

He did some good work last year but I think that comes down to being able to read the plays and players and that takes time something I am sure he will get better at.

I think it would be good to get all or FB options together with peach as he could always read the plays, maybe have ongoing weekly training sessions with him it could only help same with the centres and wingers with ET Long or someone for the front Row etc let Ricky manage how it all comes together.

stapelton is the best option to start to the season, but if kelly is playing well it may be worth trying him at fullback and moving stapelton to centre.

Yea i went with Stapleton, he should get the gig rd 1, if his is injured im hoping for Orcher!

But yea the only way Stapleton won't get the gig rd 1 is if he gets picked at winger or in the centres.
