the way bird is playing at test and origin level i think next year we would be stupid not to put him at 5/8 and have seymour at halfback!

yeh i say 1/2 as well. 5/8 will be either barrett or bird so seymour will be at 7

Half, he was a half last year and to mine the only reason he is playing 5/8 is cause he makes a better 5/8 than Noddy.

anderson will have to drop back to the bench as well. with the depth in the back row there is no need for barrett i dont think. and to go with it, all our potential backrowers are 80 minute players. sticky situation we got here

Thats the way to go for me , if we dont get barett bird to 5/8 i cant see the selectors picking him at 5/8 in rep sides much longer if he isnt playing there for his club . And he has said he wants to keep playing 5/8 in these sides anyway

6 this year for Seymour and 7 next year.A vastly improved player. If he can get the 1 brain snap per game out, he can become a top class player for us.

tupou to front row, williams to center. whats with everyone wanting players out of position?
bird IS a lock
bird IS also a 5/8
sticky take your pick
as ive said before i was always adament he should play lock, but since signing tupou i believe our strongest team is bird at 5/8

Brett Seymour has played most of his football at halfback before coming to the Sharks. He does pass the ball which of late hasn't happened too much with our halfbacks - Dykes an exception.

I remember when Dykes filled in for Kimmorley and suddenly our team looked more threatening because players were given the ball early - not just before the defense hit them.

Seymour also has a great kicking game and he seems to communicate well and set up fellow players. In other words he's not selfish and he's defininitely not predictable. I'd actually like to see Bird at five-eighth as we seem to have a bit of depth in the forwards already.

Now what to do about the outside centre...

Seymour 5/8 this year, 1/2 next year. Barrett will sign probably next week i reckon if phelps doesnt get injured on monday. therefore bird will play lock i think next year, with williams and anderson on the bench.

Although i want barrett to sign, bird could easily play 5/8 and we could buy 2 try-scoring outside backs instead e.g boyd, ropati...?

I suppose in most teams, including the Sharks, there is not much difference between a half back and a 5/8. The better of your halves at passing and kicking tends to do most the passing and kicking, and the better half at running takes on the line more. They swap in and out of first and second receiver, and swap over sides of the ruck (e.g. Lockyer is often first receiver for Broncos and does a lot of their short kicking, though Wallace is half back). Halves go wherever the coach wants them to in defense nowadays (e.g. Preston going to the wing in defense when the Panthers had him) but you'd like to rely on your 5/8 as a defender more than your half back.

Having said that, Seymour is better at tackling than most halves, which would more traditionally make him a 5/8 than a halfback, but has a reasonable short kicking game which would more traditionally make him a half back.

I think he has done well for us, but would be better if he got his hands on the ball more often in attack, and Bird is so hard to stop running down the blind side, I would prefer Seymour as halback and Bird as 5/8 for us next year.
