They should just allow 5 on the bench now anyway I reckon. It would reduce the amount of injuries which seem to be on the increase year on year (wonder if there are stats on this?)

Or you could do 16 (13+4) with a 17th and 18th man, can choose to activate one.
Can also activate one if you lose a player to significant foul play still.

That way if you lose a half or back early you could grab that guy. It things go well you can just get the forward for a stint in second half

I think if you've already lost players to injury than number of HIAs necessary to activate replacement player should drop.

You're right in what your saying Flanno, players being forced to play more minutes to cover injuries, especially from hias, only exacerbates their own chances of suffering one.

I've been an advocate for quite a while now for carrying 6 on the bench and letting the coach pick which 4 he uses depending on what happens in the game.

Aside from the obvious impact injuries can have during games, I don't like the idea of a young player at 19th man sitting out his lower grade game just to take an NRL warm up. It think from a development PoV having your best young players go consecutive weeks without playing is craziness, especially for middles at this point of the season. Obviously Iro and Tuks will play for the Jets today, but having the Cup team play the next day after NRL is not always the case.

I thought this initially as well but more I think about it can understand why they don't allow it.

Someone would try to abuse it.
Someone would probably find a way, but I can't think of how?

Definitely would get abused. Coaches would have a forward on the bench and a utility as 18 and then switch them if the game required it

Well we're not talking about during the game, but you should be able to prior to kick off name a 17.

If a player goes down during warm up you should be able to name your 18th man in their place, its ****ing stupid you can't.

Yeah sure it doesn't happen often but it happens enough.

He didn't go down during warm up, he went down mid game warming up on the sideline to sub on.

Ronnie (18th man) replaced Dugan when he was injured in pre-game warm up, that is allowed (you need to clear it with NRL but never heard of it being denied)

I was at a home game many years ago when one of our players went down in warmup and an announcement over the PA asked for Blayke Ayshford to urgently attend the change rooms as he was the replacement (18th man)

No idea why he wasn't already around the squad and they had to find him

Maybe he was too busy signing jerseys for fans lol

Don't know if we won that game but I recall fans hearts sinking when they heard the announcement (was bit of a collective groan)

Then again my memory of it not great maybe Ashyford didn't take the field and was just called in to help someone with their hair

That guy's head annoys the f out of me. Worst Shark of all time.
Players were probably the same and didn't want to see him and told him to f off until he was needed.

Fitz was asked about returning players such as Royce Hunt in the pressor and squad selection. Gave a coy vague response about need to look at it won't answer it here.

But I read it as yea nah I dunno how much chance Royce really has making the 17 if I'm real

Hunt's problem is something the rest of the forward pack aren't really struggling with right now and that is consistency. Dropping a solid week to week performer for Royce who might bring you good impact or might let you down is a hard sell for me.

No forward from the game against the Cows doesn't deserve to be there in the 17 and it's even tougher to squeeze em all in now that Iro is establishing himself in the centres and Sifa is doing a job from the bench.

Hunt is back to the fringe /depth role IMO and I wish I could say the same about Dale.

Just needs to get back to the Jets, provide some leadership to their pack, play his arse off and wait for another opportunity. Simply a case of no room for him at the moment.

Don't really see a long term future for him with us , not with the depth we have at present and AFB coming as well . Doesn't play long enough minutes nor consistently enough to make keeping him a priority .
Free up his money for someone else to be upgraded .

Didn't we just resign him recently?
