From RLW:
  • Haddock kicked a dramatic winning goal after the bell to win the game at Orana Park. He converted a Paul Merlo try, which had levelled the scores at 24-all. Merlo received the ball five metres out, feinted to the right and strolled through untouched.
  • In a free-flowing match that entertained the crowd from start to finish, Cronulla were desperately lucky to crawl away with the two points.
  • Chris Gardner crossed for two tries in six minutes mid-way through the first half.
  • Newtown five-eighth Michael Speechley hit back with an individual try, before Greg Mullane edged the Sharks ahead again with a try from a bomb.
  • In the 79th minute, winger Murphy just missed scoring off a kick-through by bright debutante fullback Andrew Ettingshausen, and a minute later the inevitable happened with Merlo crossing.
