I still haven't watched this game yet via TV but after watching the game yesterday from the Southern Grandstand the Sharks could have scored a tonne of tries if we threw early ball to the centres yesterday (2nd half atleast).
The Warriors were really playing a compressed style of defence yesterday but by the time the ball reached out centres they had already numbered up, I go back to the week before v Rabbitohs, I know our completions were terrible but we made a point of shifting early ball especially after a Rabbitohs mistake.
It makes me wonder a few different things
1) Did Flanno want us to have a better completion rate, play a more conervative style?
2) Was it a ploy that we percieved to be a weakness in the Rabbitohs?
3) Was it part of Peter Sharpes style where he wants more ball movement than our typical gritty/arm wrestle style we normally play under Flanno.
1) He wanted us to shift the ball around to tire out the big NZ forwards. Obviously he would have desired a better completion rate than last week and making errors wouldn't have helped our game plan. He let the Warriors destroy themselves. We were not that conservative.
2) Possibly but our execution was horrible in the Rabbits game.
3) Sharp was taking instructions from Flanno when he was sidelined. I doubt Sharp would have tried to change too much in the style or structure in just a few games.
wasnt it wendell that said that?
Yes it was Wendell. Honestly can this guy not say a good thing about the Sharks - he has no problems complimenting individual players but on our overall team or club he struggles to give wraps. He completely avoided the question about our strengths in the pre game commentary and just said the Warriors might struggle. Maybe he's still hurting from all the "Wendell's a wanker" chants we used to shout at him from the stands.
I can draw positives out of all 3 games. Remember we have a new playing group and some combos & set plays will gel in time.
We have heaps of improvement in us yet.
I know the Warriors were terrible and this was one of our "easy games" but we still had to execute well to get those tries. Last season we probably would have bombed half those tries. We do have a long way to go but to be winning games while improvement is still in us is not such a bad thing. For once it looks like we are evolving and our attack might actually be heading somewhere even if it is not yet there.
