  • "Cronulla gives Manly a scare" was the headline in The Australian.
  • After having a try to Greg Allen disallowed early on, Cronulla trailed Manly 15-0 at the break.
  • Soon after the interval, Allen "sparked a fightback with a try wide out, after good lead-up work by replacement forward Denis Stapleton."
  • "Three minutes later, Cronulla's bollocking second-rower Ken Maddison accepted a reverse pass from five-eighth Maurie Raper to cross near the posts. Centre Barry Andrews converted."
  • "Cronulla's chances slumped 15 minutes into the second half, when international hooker Ron Turner was taken from the field with lacerations to the mouth, after being felled by a high tackled. Manly's Mal Reilly was cautioned."
