From RLW:
  • The pressure brought the best out in Cronulla's favourite son, Steve Rogers. With the critics screaming for his head on the eve of the City selections, Rogers produced a superb performance. He almost single-handedly put the 13 Steelers on the bus back to Wollongong and thanked them for the two premiership points.
  • Winger Jim See scored after only five minutes with lead-up work from Rogers and Hatch.
  • In the 25th minute, Rogers made a break out of nothing, chipped over Illawarra fullback John Sparks, and regathered to score under the posts.
  • With five minutes to play, Forrest sent Jarvie over in the corner, after sustained Cronulla pressure. Rogers converted from the sideline to make it 18-16, then booted a neat field goal in the dying seconds.
  • Rogers, Haddock, Hatch and See were the only players up to scratch in an unimpressive Cronulla side.
