Can anyone tell me if there is a Sharkies supporter group travelling down to Canberra for the Raiders game next week? If so, which part of the stadium will you occupy? This will be my first time to Canberra Stadium and I would rather sit near fellow Shark fans. Go Sharks!!!

Sharks score 38-28 triumph over Raiders

Slick Sharks run rampant over Raiders

Who needs Brett Kimmorley and Adam Dykes?

Apparently not Cronulla. Despite being without its key playmakers, and losing its most experienced players in second rower Lance Thompson and stand-in five-eighth Nigel Vagana to injury, the Sharks had no trouble disposing of Canberra 38-28 in their National Rugby League clash at Canberra Stadium.

Leading up to the match, Sharks coach Stuart Raper maintained Cronulla was a team not reliant on individuals.

His team proved him right as it piled on three unanswered tries in the opening 12 minutes and scored a total of seven tries by fulltime to stretch its winning streak to four matches.

The final scoreline was flattering to Canberra, which failed to display the intensity needed to compete against the Sharks.

What made Cronulla's victory even sweeter was the fact it was without its stars in halfback Kimmorley (ankle) and five-eighth Dykes (ankle).

Thompson was forced off the field in the sixth minute with a knee injury and Vagana missed much of the second half after suffering a scratched cornea when he copped a finger in his left eye.

That left the likes of halfback Brett Kearney, playing just his fifth first-grade game for the Sharks, and fullback David Simmons to orchestrate a win for Cronulla.

Sharks centre Phil Bailey said it was a case of the team being determined to get the job done, regardless of who was or wasn't on the field.

"Not having Noddy (Kimmorley) and Dykesy there, it's good to get the monkey off your back," he said.

"Blokes are really playing for the team instead of themselves.

"We've got a motto at the club and between the boys; Just get it done.

"It doesn't matter how we get it done, it was pretty ugly in the second half there especially for 20 minutes, but we got it done in the end."

The ugliness Bailey was referring to was the only part of the match Canberra cares to remember.

After trailing 30-6 early in the second half, Canberra scored three quick, consecutive tries in the 48th, 51st and 55th minutes courtesy of skipper Clinton Schifcofske, second rower Thom Learooyd-Lars and five-eighth Jason Smith to tighten the scoreline to 30-22.

Raiders winger Adam Mogg added a consolation try after the fulltime siren but it wasn't enough to steal victory from the deserving Sharks.

Raper was full of praise for his injury-depleted side.

"No Noddy, no Dykesy and then losing Thommo and Nige, they are our four most experienced players in the club," he said.

"You start relying on one or two individuals you could get caught out when they're injured or when they're on an off game.

'We're keeping in control of the way we play, we're playing some smart footy."

It was a different story for Raiders coach Matt Elliott.

"They tried harder than us, it's that simple," he said.

It took just three minutes for the Sharks to open the scoring via hooker Kevin Kingston, with Simmons and Vagana next to cross Canberra's line before Canberra finally responded in the 18th minute when centre David Howell intercepted the ball.

Cronulla lock Paul Gallen scored a soft try from dummy half in the 21st minute and Bailey crossed for his team's fifth try in the 24th minute to give Cronulla a 24-6 halftime lead.

Cameron Ciraldo added to the Sharks' lead in the opening minutes of the second half before the momentum suddenly shifted in Canberra's favour with the three successive tries.

Simmons sealed the match for the visitors in the 66th minute when he crossed for his second try of the match.

Thompson will have scans on his knee and Vagana will have his eye reassessed on Monday.

In-form Cronulla posted its fourth successive National Rugby League win this afternoon, downing the Raiders 38-28 at Canberra Stadium.

The Sharks went in without first-choice halves Brett Kimmorley and Adam Dykes, both sidelined with injury, and lost inspirational second-rower Lance Thompson to a hamstring injury during the game.

But new number seven Brett Kearney took the game by the scruff of the neck and needed to because an eye injury prevented five-eighth Nigel Vagana from coming out for the second half.

Cronulla has now posted four successive victories, a record bettered only by ladder leaders Melbourne.

Canberra on the other hand appear incapable of stringing together back-to-back triumphs and have a poor first half to blame for their defeat.

Too much dropped ball and missed tackles allowed the Sharks to open up a 24-6 half-time lead with Kevin Kingston, David Simmons, Vagana, Paul Gallen and Phil Bailey all crossing for the visitors.

When Cameron Ciraldo crossed early in the second half, Cronulla had extended its lead to 30-6.

But the Raiders finally found their feet and posted the next three four-pointers, with Clinton Schifcofske, Tom Leayrod-Lahrs and Jason Smith pulling the score back to 30-22.

Ultimately though Canberra's first-half performance cost it dearly and there was no way back when Simmons posted his second try.

A day to forget for Canberra

CANBERRA 28 CRONULLA 38

CANBERRA coach Matthew Elliott is a realist if ever there was one, and he had no plans to make excuses for his team's shabby performance in crawling out of the starting blocks before losing to Cronulla yesterday.

"There is a base level about our sport which is to do with investing effort and energy and they [Cronulla] did more in every aspect of the game than us," Elliott said. "They tried harder than us, that's what happened."

Making it even more frustrating for the Raiders was the knowledge they had trained so well in the lead-up to the game.

"I've never been involved in a better week of training," said fullback and captain Clinton Schifcofske. "But what we produced in the game was unacceptable."

The beginning by the Raiders was as soft as you can get and after 13 minutes they trailed 16-0. The Sharks went into the game without not only their first-choice halfback, Brett Kimmorley, but also Adam Dykes, who had been deputising for Kimmorley after switching from five-eighth before he got hurt last weekend. Yet the absence of both of their regular playmakers didn't seem to matter.

Canberra provided minimal resistance as Cronulla scored three tries in the first 12 minutes through hooker Kevin Kingston, fullback David Simmons and five-eighth Nigel Vagana. Winger Luke Covell converted two of the tries to shoot the visitors to a 16-0 lead.

Raiders centre David Howell scored off an intercept in the 18th minute and Schifcofske converted, cutting the deficit to 10 points, but instead of that response being the launching pad for a comeback, it was only a short interruption to Cronulla's first-half dominance.

The Sharks scored again, through lock Paul Gallen, in the 21st minute, and three minutes later, centre Paul Bailey crossed. Covell missed with both conversion attempts, but Cronulla had kicked away to lead 24-6, an advantage that they took to the break.

Canberra had gone into the game with a scoring average of less than 24 points, so it was hard to envisage their overhauling the Sharks after the interval, particularly since the Sharks had conceded an average of just more than 22 going into the game.

As so often happens in these circumstances, the team that got turned on its head in the first half came back with a much better effort in the second, and the Raiders, after the Sharks had at first extended their lead to 30-6, scored three tries in seven minutes to cut the lead to 30-22.

But one more try from Cronulla was enough to take the edge off Canberra's revival and the Sharks pulled away again to a 38-22 lead before Canberra scored right on full-time.

Cronulla coach Stuart Raper was naturally delighted with the way his team had played, considering that not only were Kimmorley and Dykes both out but also that the Sharks lost second-rower Lance Thompson (knee) and five-eighth Vagana (eye) during the game.

Thompson will have scans to assess a problem in the back of his knee, but it is not considered serious and he will probably play this weekend.

Vagana got a scrape across the eye and was wearing a patch over it after the game, but there was no significant damage and he, too, should be OK for the next round.

"We ended up without the four most experienced players in our squad, and to win the game so well after that was a tremendous effort," Raper said. "They came back in the second half and we had to see that off, which we did.

"We've been going through a change of playing style in which we're trying not to rely too much on individuals and I think we saw a good example of that today. It was a great team effort."

Elliott, while disappointed with the way his team went about things, said the Sharks deserved congratulations for winning under tough circumstances.

"They had blokes backing up [from the City-Country match on Friday night] and they lost a couple of fellows during the game," he said. "I take my hat off to them. It was a really gutsy performance."

Elliott conceded it was a forgettable day but added that he wouldn't be able to forget it that easily.

"If you can arrange it [I'll forget it]," he said. "But it's pretty fresh in the memory at the moment."
MATCH FOCUS

THEY SAID

Canberra coach Matthew Elliott wasn't beating about the bush about why his team lost. "They [Cronulla] did more in every aspect of the game than us," Elliott said. "They tried harder than us, that's what happened."

STAR MAN

Cronulla halfback Brett Kearney is playing for a contract for next year and he's on the way to getting one after a fine effort running the game for his team yesterday.
