Lose by 2. Fifita makes a stupid penalty in front of the sticks with 2 to go

No carney/lewis/beau/toops. gallen? Assuming Holdsworth plays 5/8 I'd like to see Graham take on some of the playmaking in this game, and not just running down the left with short flat passes at the the line. If wade plays 13, he and Holdsworth could share the responsibility of leading the attack. I know it won';t happen, but I'm convinced Graham can do more in attack for this team than he does now.

Herald Article Below:

Injury-prone Cronulla face lean start to season

Felled by calf problems: Chris Heighington.

Cronulla will have more than 600 NRL games of back-row experience sidelined heading into their round-one clash against Gold Coast.

‘We had 400 back-rowers and now we’ve got none.’

Luke Lewis (shoulder reconstruction) and Anthony Tupou (knee reconstruction) are certain to miss at least the first three weeks of the season while calf problems look to have halted Chris Heighington's start to this year. Heighington has been left in a moon boot after battling injuries in both calves.

The news is better for prop Bryce Gibbs. Despite an injury-plagued 2013, Gibbs should play in round one despite breaking his hand in Cronulla's first trial against Manly.

The injuries will test the depth of the Sharks' forward pack. While back-up players have been plentiful for Cronulla in recent years, the off-season departures of Tyrone Peachey, Jayson Bukuya and Jon Green and the retirements of Ben Ross and Mark Taufua have left the squad lean on forward back-ups.

Cronulla coach Peter Sharp said the club had enough depth to fill the positions.

''We had 400 back-rowers and now we've got none,'' Sharp said. ''We didn't budget on Lewie getting hurt in the World Cup and Toops doing an ACL [anterior cruciate ligament] in the second-last game of the season.

''Any injuries are a concern but they are rehabbing really well. They'll play a lot of football this year, just not round one. Toops is one of the great rehabbers of all time, he is easily accelerated. They are seasoned campaigners and know how to get their body ready.

''We certainly need those boys back as soon as possible.''

Off-season recruit Matt Prior is expected to join Wade Graham and Paul Gallen in the back row while Tupou Sopoaga – who played one NRL game last year – has emerged as a bench option.

The returning Siosaia Vave and Tim Robinson will look to fill any void up front along with Gibbs, Andrew Fifita and Sam Tagataese, while Gallen could also spend time in the middle of the field.

''Matt Prior's versatility stands him in good stead,'' Sharp said. ''He played a lot of centre and middle at the Dragons ... [He] has been very good at training for us. Wade can play 80minutes and Gal plays massive minutes.''

Todd Carney will put the hamstring he strained at the Auckland Nines to the test this week with the five-eighth expected to run for the first time since hurting it. Winger Beau Ryan, who has a neck injury, will also be fit for round one.

''Our squad is reasonably settled in comparison to some clubs,'' Sharp said. ''We've got an experienced side, which has been together for a few years.''

Gallen will return to Cronulla training on Monday after having a few days off after his professional boxing debut on Wednesday night. Gallen scored a technical knockout win against Herman Ene-Purcell in the second round.

We always seem to have amazingly good depth in the fowards but never the backs or halves

I think with a prop-second row of

Fifita Taga Graham Prior Gallen

Gibbs Sopoaga Roqica/Robinson/Fifita We could still be fielding a relatively tough scrum.

Remember Taylor will be out for Titans in this game
