Roosters see off Shark attack
02-May-2009

Cronulla's drastic run of consecutive defeats stretched to seven as the Roosters pulled off a reasonably comfortable 19-12 win at Shark Park on Saturday evening.

The continuation of the Sharks' losing streak coincided with a return to form for the Roosters, who posted their first win since round four after defeats to the Broncos, Warriors and Dragons.

Shaun Kenny-Dowall scored a first-half double and on the opposite flank Sam Perrett touched down after the break for the visitors' three tries.

Craig Fitzgibbon landed three conversions from as many attempts, one a difficult sideline prospect in cruel wind, while Braith Anasta iced the win with a late field goal.

While the Roosters controlled the Sharks for the majority of the match, Anasta's one-pointer was required to kill off a late attack which threatened to ambush the visitors in the final moments.

Skipper Paul Gallen reaped the rewards for hard work when he burrowed over in the 71st minute, and minutes later the Sharks looked to be in a position to level the clash, but were denied four points because of an obstruction in the lead-up to a try.

That was the let-off the Roosters needed and Anasta's deft drop kick killed off any hopes of a late comeback for the desperate Sharks.

"We held the ball and a bit of class got us home in the end," Fitzgibbon told ABC Grandstand.

"It was pleasing to be able to control the game like we had even though it was a scrappy one.

"Not too many people come here and get a win so we'll take that."

Kenny-Dowall's double broke a scoring drought that lasted more than three halves of football - the Roosters' last points coming in the first half of their round six match in Auckland.

The visitors' third try came about in bizarre circumstances; a wayward grubber from the boot of Nate Myles early in the tackle count looked to be rolling harmlessly out of play before Perrett streaked through unnoticed and leapt forward to ground the ball.

Cronulla's desperation was palpable from that point on, with flick passes and unstructured ball-playing exposing the absence of Trent Barrett - who despite shaking off a back problem to start was forced off with another injury.

Roosters: 19 (S Kenny-Dowall 2, S Perrett tries; C Fitzgibbon 3 conversions, B Anasta field goal)

Sharks: 12 (R Williams, P Gallen; L Covell 2 conversions)

Yep he is doing way too much as far as I am concerned he will always put his hand up that's the problem he needs to let some of the other boys take some ball.

I am also getting a little sick of the guys throwing the pill out the back and hoping for the best we lost possession three times tonight because of that.

Only 9,879 fans were on hand to see the Sydney Roosters win their first game in a month as they look to kick-start their season. They grinded out a gritty 19-12 victory at Toyota Stadium. Cronulla's season seems all but over as they were condemned to their seventh straight loss and lost chief playmaker Trent Barrett to concussion at halftime.

Barrett who was initially ruled out of the match declared himself fit an hour before the game as he looked to inspire the Sharks to victory. It was not to be for the classy five-eighth as he was left dazed after being hit by Craig Fitzgibbon late in the first half.

The Roosters who had not scored a point in their last three halves of football would have felt a monumental sigh of relief when Shaun Kenny-Dowall crossed over in the 20th minute. The Bondi boys showed quick hands to unleash the kiwi flyer down the flank and he finished strongly to give the Roosters a 6-0 lead.

Just five minutes later Kenny-Dowall grabbed a double as Anasta marked his stamp on the game. Anasta took the ball on the last and ran towards the short side before chipping a neat kick into the left corner and Kenny-Dowall dived onto the ball for a 10-0 lead.

The Sharks needed to be the next team to score and they Reece Williams did just that five minutes from halftime. Brett Seymour stabbed through a grubber kick which hit the upright and popped up straight into the arms of Williams.

The Roosters had 60% of possession heading into the sheds but would have been disapointed with only a four point lead.

The second half continued like the first with plenty of drop ball as Craig Fitzgibbon converted a penalty goal to stretch the roosters lead out to a converted try.

When prop Nate Myles received the ball metres from the line in the 52nd minute he turned playmaker as he toed through a perfect grubber for an unmarked Sam Perrett to dive on. The deft kick from the QLD Origin forward gave the Roosters a 12 point lead.

Cronulla fans were streaming out of the ground when Paul Gallen who was easily the Sharks best player muscled his way over in the 71st minute. The converted try reduced the gap to just six points and the Sharks thought they had sent the game into golden point when they crossed the line with four minutes remaining but former Rooster Anthony Tupou blatantly obstructed a defender.

It was Braith Anasta who showed a cool head for the Roosters to seal the game with a field goal three minutes from time.

The Sharks have the bye next week as they will receive their first two points in 8 weeks while the Roosters take on the Melbourne Storm at home.

Roosters post 'ugly win' over Sharks
May 02, 2009

Skd2Sydney Roosters back rower Craig Fitzgibbon told Grandstand his side will make no apologies about their 19-12 win over Cronulla being a less than attractive contest.

The Roosters clinched just their third win of the season in what was a typically dour bottom of the ladder clash at Shark Park on Saturday evening, the visitors having scored three tries to two.

The defeat left the Sharks pinned down in 16th position, having posted just one victory from eight starts this season.

Fitzgibbon says the Roosters do not care that their triumph was hardly a spectacle.

"We'll take an ugly win at the moment," he said.

"It was a little bit, those games are hard to play in.

"You don't know where the ball is coming from, there's unusual field patterns, the style of play is hard to defend against."

Roosters captain Braith Anasta explained that the importance of the triumph could not be underestimated.

Sharks captain Paul Gallen felt he and his team-mates are not being rewarded for their effort.

Score:

Sydney Roosters 19 (Kenny-Dowall 2, Perrett tries; Fitzgibbon 2 con, pen; Anasta fg)

Cronulla 12 (Williams, Gallen tries; Covell 2 con)

Not sure why Selmes got a shot as he's not long back from injury and I don't know how his NSW Cup form has been, but I think the main reason Seu Seu was left out was because of Barrett's late inclusion; there had to be a question mark over Barrett's ability to see out the game (which he failed to do but because of concussion rather than his back injury) and so Blake Green was required in the 17 as cover.
