Where’d you see the press conference nulla? I was expecting fox to televise and as quick as you like Fox close down the telecast. I mean what gives, on Monday nights they stay on for another hour talking about the game and showing the press stuff and then tonight zip? Typical?
Fox sports news.they always have clips of post match press.

After nine losses, a win's a win. I'll take it and spruik it and I'll spend my winnings at the club next Sunday before the game.

Go Sharkies.

Get a bit of us at 2.50 to win, or even better us 1-12 at 4.00?

Sharks win
May 29, 2009

Putting a long losing streak and off-field controversies well and truly behind them, the Sharks have gutsed out an exciting 13-10 victory over the Eels on a wet night at Parramatta Stadium.

The Sharks levelled the scores at 10-apiece with around 10 minutes of the match remaining, before a wobbly Trent Barrett field goal put them ahead for good, with the victory providing the Sharks with their first victory since round one.

There were jubilant scenes after the final siren, with stand-in skipper Trent Barrett summing up the feelings of the team when speaking at the post match press conference.

“We’ve been to hell and back and hopefully this is the week we’ve turned the corner, we keep going forward and can start concentrating on the footy,” Barrett said.

As for the field goal, Barrett was a little sheepish when describing it following the match.

“It was a bit ugly that’s for sure,” Barrett said. “But those haven’t been going for us but it did tonight.”

Coach Ricky Stuart was also understandably relieved with the win and he heaped praise on his rookie brigade, reserving special mention for debutant half back Scott Porter.

“It’s a great relief, for myself, the players and for the club. We worked hard in the pre-season and we’ve worked hard every week so I’m really pleased for the boys,” Stuart said.

“You probably need to confirm the numbers, but we had something like seven players who have only played 18 NRL games between them. And as for Scott Porter, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a half back as comfortable or as cohesive on debut as he was.”

Played on a slippery surface in persistent rain, the match was an arm wrestle from start to finish, with both teams having early opportunities but with neither able to take advantage until a Parramatta penalty saw them kick deep into the Sharks quarter.

After some solid goal-line defence held the home team at bay, the Sharks finally cracked when Joel Reddy pushed through down the left edge for the first points of the night. Luke Burt’s conversion attempt was unsuccessful but the Eels would lead by 4-0 after 18 minutes.

Gaining an advantage in possession the Sharks worked their way into an attacking zone and after some concerted pressure struck back with a try of their own to winger Luke Covell. The Sharks first points coming about courtesy of a Scott Porter cross-field kick which was spectacularly plucked out of the sky by Covell who then managed to plant the ball down inches from the dead ball line.

Covell converted from wide out and the Sharks went in front by 6-4 with around 15 minutes of the first half remaining.

The Eels jumped back out to a lead when Burt won the race to a grubber kick to score under the uprights, with the Parramatta fullback also adding the extras as the Eels took a 10-6 lead to the break after an entertaining first 40-minutes despite the difficult conditions.

With the rain sweeping in and points at a premium neither team was able to add to their half time totals for almost half an hour but it was the Sharks who would even-up the scores when Mitch Brown dived over wide out after a good interchange of passing, making the scores 10-10 with 10 minutes to go.

Covell shaved the upright with his conversion attempt, setting up a frantic final period to decide the game.

With their tails up the Sharks applied the pressure to the Eels and were unlucky not to go ahead when Porter had a pot shot at field goal charged down, before Barrett’s attempt scraped over to give the Sharks the lead.

Covell took the margin out to three points with about 40-seconds remaining and despite a few anxious moments the Sharks would hold on for a stirring victory.

While the Sharks had a number of stars on the night, none were better than Anthony Tupou, the international backrower inspirational in defence and a constant menace to the Eels with the ball in his hands.

Of the rookie Sharks Nathan Stapleton was impressive at fullback, Blake Ferguson continues to improve on the flank and Porter’s kicking game put the Sharks on the front foot throughout the contest.

Others to play strongly included front rower Jacob Selmes and the ever-reliable Luke Douglas, with Selmes playing close to his best match in the top grade.

In the earlier match the Toyota Cup Sharks were comprehensively outplayed in the slippery conditions, conceding 10 tries in a 52-4 loss to the Eels.

Playing without key team members Stapleton, Matt Wright, Johnny Mannah and Ferguson, the quartet playing in the Sharks NRL side, along with perhaps their most consistent performer in Trent Grubb who had been elevated into the NSW Cup side, the Sharks were no match for a rampaging Eels outfit.

While down the road in Windsor, the NSW Cup Sharks registered their sixth victory in succession, coming back from a 12-0 deficit to win by 24-12 against the Windsor Wolves.

The next match for both the NRL and Toyota Cup Sharks will be against New Zealand at Toyota Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with the NSW Cup Sharks also at home next Sunday.

CRONULLA 13 PARRAMATTA 10

TRENT Barrett says coach Ricky Stuart has been the glue that held the club together during their year from hell.

In emotional scenes that ended 77 days of misery since their last victory, the Sharks were finally free of all the sordid and painful headlines for one night at least.

After enduring off-field controversies, financial woes and a shocking injury-toll, players and fans shared in the celebrations as they overcame a disappointing Parramatta outfit.

Without inspirational leader Paul Gallen, the inexperienced Sharks recorded just their second win of the season - and first since the opening round against Penrith.

Stand-in skipper Barrett claimed Gallen should keep the captaincy despite mounting pressure he will be stood down next Tuesday after his racial slur controversy last week. But all that was put aside after a gripping victory.

Barrett, whose 76th-minute field goal virtually sealed the result with four minutes remaining, spoke freely about the toughest year of his career. "It's a huge relief,'' Barrett said. "I'm really happy myself, but I'm really happy for the club.

"We've been to hell and backand hopefully this is the week we turn the corner and keep going forward and we can focus on the footy. He (Stuart) won't mind me saying that if we had a different coach, or a coach with not as strong a personality, the whole joint would've fallen apart.''

Barrett also went into bat for Gallen, who watched from the sidelines last night. "Gal's a leader,'' Barrett said. "He's had a couple of things go against him, but his attitude and leadership skills is what this club needs. It's all a big learning curve for Gal and I know he has the players' support.''

Staring down the barrel of a club record 10th straight losses, Stuart axed veteran hooker Corey Hughes, Blake Green and Grant Millington for fresh-faced rookies like halfback Scott Porter, Matthew Wright, Nathan Stapleton, John Mannah and Tony Caine.

"We had a total of 18 games between seven of our players. That's an amazing stat,'' Stuart said. "You go and have that in any other football club in this competition and I promise you they wouldn't be in as high spirits and they wouldn't have won that game tonight.''

Porter, who owns a lawnmowing business, was brilliant on debut despite the Eels targeting him in defence. "I thought he was outstanding. Being a local boy made it even better,'' Stuart said.

"The way he found the ground with his kicks, gave us a chance to be in the kick-chase. He was tough. Bringing a boy into such a tough position the club is in, he played very well.''

Eels five-eighth Daniel Mortimer played a hand in cracking the Sharks open, linking with Luke Burt for Joel Reddy to cross. But a lack of patience and poor handling hurt the Eels.

Rare triumph for embattled Sharks

Eels 10 Sharks 13

The besieged Sharks notched only their second win of the season after a dogged slog to victory over the Eels last night.

Beset by off- and on-field problems, the Sharks somehow held off a lifeless Eels side missing Jarryd Hayne (Origin duty), Krisnan Inu (suspended) and Nathan Hindmarsh (injured).

The Sharks had plenty of missing players themselves and have looked toothless in attack all season. It looked like more of the same when they produced pressure aplenty but no points.

After absorbing that, the Eels swiftly made their way upfield and five-eighths Joel Reddy scored after a fine pass by lock Todd Lowrie following a Luke Burt burst from fullback.

Luke Covell scored with a huge leap to a pinpoint Trent Barrett kick before a slick grubber by Jeff Robson saw Burt score next for an Eels' 10-6 lead at halftime.

The mistakes rained down heavier than the weather in the second half but the Eels began to suffer from the same can't-score disease.

Interchange back Mitch Brown levelled the score and Barrett's field goal gave the Sharks an 11-10 lead before Covell kicked a penalty to reap a rare two points for the Shire.

Eels 10 (J. Reddy, L. Burt tries; Burt goal), Sharks 13 (L. Covell, M. Brown tries; Covell 2 goals, T. Barrett field goal). Halftime: 10-6.

I took up at 3.10 to win before the dragons game but my gut was telling me to go for the Eels/Sharks half/Full, I think at that time it was paying 9.00 o something.

Sharks end drought, beating Eels
Updated: 07:13, May 31, 2009

The embattled Cronulla Sharks have snapped a nine-game losing streak to edge out the Parramatta Eels 13-10 in a tense battle played in miserable conditions at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday night.

Not since Round 1 against the Panthers had the Sharks tasted victory and since then the club has endured a wretched run of bad publicity that has even raised questions about its future.

But after trailing 6-10 at half-time, the boys from the Shire won the arm-wrestle in a dour second half that went down to the wire.

Stand-in skipper Trent Barrett produced the play of the game with a 75th-minute field goal to break a 10-10 deadlock before winger Luke Covell slotted a penalty goal with a minute remaining to cap the win.

When the full-time siren sounded the emotional Sharks players immediately ran over to celebrate with their hardened supporters in the 7,014 crowd.

Both sides took inexperienced line-ups into the clash, most notably in the halves with the Eels showcasing boom 19-year-old pivot Daniel Mortimer for the time in the top grade and the Sharks going with 24-year-old debutant Scott Porter in the all-important No.7 jersey.

But it was Porter who had the most reason to cheer after producing a fine kicking game to help steer his team over the line.

Unfortunately for the Eels, stalwart second-rower Nathan Hindmarsh left the field in the second half with a badly corked left arm which may place him in doubt for next week's clash against the Knights.

After a keenly-fought opening, the Eels were first to cross in the 17th minute courtesy of a simple ball-spread left which saw centre Joel Reddy power past opposite Matthew Wright for a try and a 4-0 lead to the home side.

Covell's impressive aerial skills put the Sharks on the board when the big winger flew high above his opponents to reel in a perfectly-weighted Porter corner kick in the 24th minute.

Covell's sideline conversion was leather-perfect as the visitors took a 6-4 lead.

Wright's poor first half for the Sharks continued, the young centre dropping the ball to give the Eels possession for their second try.

Half-back Jeff Robson punched a grubber though the Sharks' defence for full-back Luke Burt to race though and score in the 31st minute, giving the hosts a 10-6 advantage.

The Eels had their chances to open up a sizable gap in the second half, but poor finishing and basic errors cost them dearly.

The Sharks grabbed a much-needed try 68 minutes in when they played a simple numbers game for second-rower Anthony Tupou to send interchange back Mitch Brown over in the left corner.

Covell missed the sideline conversion to keep the scores level at 10-10.

Barrett's field goal and Covell's penalty goal - after Eels second-rower Joe Galavao was pinged for a high shot on Brown - sealed the deal for Cronulla.

Sharks out of Sticky situation

31-May-2009

Ricky Stuart was breathing a sigh of relief after Cronulla snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 13-10 win over the Eels at Parramatta Stadium.

It was just the second win of a season of woe for the Sharks, who have lurched from one disaster to another, on and off the field.

"It's a great relief for myself, the players and the club and it puts you in a bit of a brighter frame (of mind)," Stuart said.

"They have worked hard this season and have just not been getting the results.

"That win typified about what I have been saying over the last three months.

"Out there I think there was 18 games of first grade between seven players - you don't have that in any other football club in the competition."

Youngster Scott Porter had a taste at half-back for the first time for the Sharks and Stuart was full of praise for his performance.

"I was really pleased for Scotty, I thought he played an outstanding game," Stuart said.

"I said to Ports in our last session yesterday that I have never seen a more comfortable debutant at training.

"I am criticised for being a little bit critical on my half-backs... but I was really impressed with his first game at first grade."

Sharks stand-in captain Trent Barrett was also relieved with the win.

"I'm that happy for all the boys and the club," he said.

"We really needed that, not just on the field but off the field. [It's] testament to everyone hanging in together, they really deserve it."

Eels coach Daniel Andersno was critical of his players for "lacking football intelligence".

"We should have never got in that position to lose," he said.

"We were in as comfortable a position as we have been this year, our yardage kicking was poor, it was very disappointing.

"We should have won tonight and I am very upset that we didn't win.

"We didn't show footy intelligence in the second half."

Relief, excitement and hope all at once.

Here we go boys.

Up, Up, Cronulla played at top volume off the old vinyl through the Southern Tablelands tonight. If you opened a window within you would have heard it.

Very happy with the win.. Thought porter played brilliantly on debut. Though I thought Barrett was dead weight though. Would like to see Porter in the 7 with Seymour at 6 (if he can get his shyte together and stay off the piss,

One thing i have a massive problem with is our play of the ball. We had 0 quick play of the ball last night. It seems a lot of our players are happy to just lie there and wait for the opposition to hold them down until the defense is set. You watch teams like Melbourne and the dogs, and they continually fight in tackles. They try not to get turned over, and they try to get up on on with it as quick as possible, which in turn gives their halves more time and more room.

Yeah the refs should be watching, but after 12 rounds its obvious they arent and its something Ricky should be addressing.

I honestly think this is one of the more serious flaws we have. Its tough to get line breaks, when the defense is set for every single play.

Mortimer debut one positive for Eels
By Ian McCullough
31 May 2009 13:23:09

Saturday's 13-10 defeat by bottom-of-the-table Cronulla may have been a new low in a disappointing season for Parramatta fans, but the performance of 19-year-old Daniel Mortimer on his NRL debut was at least one positive.

The slightly-built five-eighth, who is the son of Bulldogs legend Peter Mortimer and nephew of former NSW and Kangaroos star Steve Mortimer, looked more than comfortable against the Sharks, but it was not enough to stop Ricky Stuart's side recording their first win in 10 games.

Eels coach Daniel Anderson was furious with his players after the game, accusing them of lacking "football intelligence" and not following his instructions but spared Mortimer from criticism.

"Morts had a very encouraging debut and I thought he looked threatening but I don't think we gave him the ball enough," said Anderson.

The coach also refused to use inexperience as an excuse for the defeat and said he felt his side lost the game due to errors and poor judgements.

"We had enough experience in the forward pack, we just didn't pay attention to messages that were going out ... Blake Ferguson was injured for most of the second half, he was hobbling, but we refused to kick in behind him ... we competed as hard as we could defensively and were game but we should never have put ourselves in a position to lose the game," Anderson said.

Mortimer showed glimpses of a bright future with some intelligent kicking and good handling skills but said the defeat took the gloss off his big night.

"It was disappointing to lose because I was buzzing still from getting the chance to play I was nervous and excited and even during the game I was still taking in that I was playing in the NRL," he said.

"I had a whole lot of family in for the game, my old man, my uncle Steve, nan and my mum and I am hungry for more chances to play.

"I heard on Wednesday I was playing, I have got a lot mates that came up from Orange for the game to watch and it was a great experience and one I will always remember."

Barrett delighted after finally tasting victory

He admits it was one of his worst ever kicks on goal, but Trent Barrett says watching his last-gasp field goal somehow creep over Parramatta's crossbar to help end Cronulla's long wait for a NRL win was a moment he will treasure.

The 31-year-old had only tasted victory once since moving to the Sharks after a spell in England, as Saturday's dour 13-10 victory over Parramatta at a sodden Parramatta Stadium ended a run of nine successive defeats for Ricky Stuart's side.

"I hit it horrible but it went over," Barrett told AAP.

"We have been in matches all year and that has been what has been hard to take when we have lost, we turn up for training, front up and for one reason or another we just couldn't win.

"Although that kick was really ugly ... they haven't been going over for 10 weeks and hopefully that is a turning point four our season."

The Sharks celebrated victory like they had won a grand final at the final hooter and Barrett said the victory was a boost for everyone connected with the beleaguered club.

"Everyone is elated, there is a lot of happy, relieved boys in the dressing room and it is great to see ... it is a real reward for everyone's hard work over the last few weeks," he said.

Barrett admitted he didn't know the words to the Sharks' song, Up, Up Cronulla, and paid tribute to Stuart in what has been a nightmare season for the club.

"I have only sung it once!," he said

"We have been to hell and back this season and hopefully this is the week we can turn the corner and focus on the footy. If we had a coach who is not as strong as 'Sticky' (Stuart) the whole joint would have fallen apart."

Stuart's decision to draft in Scott Porter at halfback for his first grade debut proved to be a successful one with the 24-year-old, who has spent time with Sydney Roosters and playing in the Queensland Cup before moving to the Sharks, impressing alongside Barrett.

"The young blokes like Scotty and Johnny Mannah were terrific, it has been hard on them the last few weeks when we have not been winning and it is hard bringing young blokes into a losing team and I thought a lot of young blokes were our best players," said Barrett.

Stuart was also full of praise for Porter's performance.

"I was really pleased for him, he played an outstanding game I am not going to exaggerate anything because we won ... but I said to Ports after our last session that I have never seen a more comfortable debutant," Stuart said.

"The way he found the ground with his kicks ... he gave us a really big kick chase ... it is really hard to step in at halfback in the NRL and especially in a struggling team and I thought he did a terrific job."
