Sharks win

Putting a long losing streak and off-field controversies well and truly behind them, the Sharks have gutsed out an exciting 13-10 victory over the Eels on a wet night at Parramatta Stadium.
The Sharks levelled the scores at 10-apiece with around 10 minutes of the match remaining, before a wobbly Trent Barrett field goal put them ahead for good, with the victory providing the Sharks with their first victory since round one.
There were jubilant scenes after the final siren, with stand-in skipper Trent Barrett summing up the feelings of the team when speaking at the post match press conference.
“We’ve been to hell and back and hopefully this is the week we’ve turned the corner, we keep going forward and can start concentrating on the footy,” Barrett said.
As for the field goal, Barrett was a little sheepish when describing it following the match.
“It was a bit ugly that’s for sure,” Barrett said. “But those haven’t been going for us but it did tonight.”
Coach Ricky Stuart was also understandably relieved with the win and he heaped praise on his rookie brigade, reserving special mention for debutant half back Scott Porter.
“It’s a great relief, for myself, the players and for the club. We worked hard in the pre-season and we’ve worked hard every week so I’m really pleased for the boys,” Stuart said.
“You probably need to confirm the numbers, but we had something like seven players who have only played 18 NRL games between them. And as for Scott Porter, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a half back as comfortable or as cohesive on debut as he was.”
Played on a slippery surface in persistent rain, the match was an arm wrestle from start to finish, with both teams having early opportunities but with neither able to take advantage until a Parramatta penalty saw them kick deep into the Sharks quarter.
After some solid goal-line defence held the home team at bay, the Sharks finally cracked when Joel Reddy pushed through down the left edge for the first points of the night. Luke Burt’s conversion attempt was unsuccessful but the Eels would lead by 4-0 after 18 minutes.
Gaining an advantage in possession the Sharks worked their way into an attacking zone and after some concerted pressure struck back with a try of their own to winger Luke Covell. The Sharks first points coming about courtesy of a Scott Porter cross-field kick which was spectacularly plucked out of the sky by Covell who then managed to plant the ball down inches from the dead ball line.
Covell converted from wide out and the Sharks went in front by 6-4 with around 15 minutes of the first half remaining.
The Eels jumped back out to a lead when Burt won the race to a grubber kick to score under the uprights, with the Parramatta fullback also adding the extras as the Eels took a 10-6 lead to the break after an entertaining first 40-minutes despite the difficult conditions.
With the rain sweeping in and points at a premium neither team was able to add to their half time totals for almost half an hour but it was the Sharks who would even-up the scores when Mitch Brown dived over wide out after a good interchange of passing, making the scores 10-10 with 10 minutes to go.
Covell shaved the upright with his conversion attempt, setting up a frantic final period to decide the game.
With their tails up the Sharks applied the pressure to the Eels and were unlucky not to go ahead when Porter had a pot shot at field goal charged down, before Barrett’s attempt scraped over to give the Sharks the lead.
Covell took the margin out to three points with about 40-seconds remaining and despite a few anxious moments the Sharks would hold on for a stirring victory.
While the Sharks had a number of stars on the night, none were better than Anthony Tupou, the international backrower inspirational in defence and a constant menace to the Eels with the ball in his hands.
Of the rookie Sharks Nathan Stapleton was impressive at fullback, Blake Ferguson continues to improve on the flank and Porter’s kicking game put the Sharks on the front foot throughout the contest.
Others to play strongly included front rower Jacob Selmes and the ever-reliable Luke Douglas, with Selmes playing close to his best match in the top grade.
In the earlier match the Toyota Cup Sharks were comprehensively outplayed in the slippery conditions, conceding 10 tries in a 52-4 loss to the Eels.
Playing without key team members Stapleton, Matt Wright, Johnny Mannah and Ferguson, the quartet playing in the Sharks NRL side, along with perhaps their most consistent performer in Trent Grubb who had been elevated into the NSW Cup side, the Sharks were no match for a rampaging Eels outfit.
While down the road in Windsor, the NSW Cup Sharks registered their sixth victory in succession, coming back from a 12-0 deficit to win by 24-12 against the Windsor Wolves.
The next match for both the NRL and Toyota Cup Sharks will be against New Zealand at Toyota Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with the NSW Cup Sharks also at home next Sunday.
