I think we have high expectations of Filiga because of all the hype surrounding his "the next Sonny Bill" tag. If a player with that potential comes along at the same age that Sonny Bill and someone like Benji Marshall did then they seem to expect that player to reach the same great heights. There are plenty of superstars now that took plenty of time to get there. Johnathan Thurston bided his time as a reserve grader and fringe first grader at the Bulldogs for several years, as boudos said, Greg Bird took a while as did Gal. Kimmorley played under Johns at Newcastle for a long time before he got out on his own ( I know he's not in the same class as Sonny Bill) and Lockyer took a while to come out of Alfie's shadow at the Broncos. He made his debut as an 18 year old and while he certainly looked the goods, he really didn't start to set the world on fire as a superstar until much later.
I think we all expect our young players now to do a "Sonny Bill" and dominate a game and when it doesn't happen we really get our tails up. We have to remember that a player like Sonny Bill doesn't come along every year.
SOS is right when he says that Filiga doesn't look like he wants to be there, I have seen him play several times and while there is from time to time a glimpse of that superstar status he doesn't get involved enough in the play.
We have to remember that he was out of the game for a long time last year, he has had to play this year in a side that quite frankly has been outgunned nearly every time they have taken the field. It was only when he had that 15 minutes in First Grade against the Panthers that he did look good. He seemed like he was enthused and wanted to get stuck in. Maybe the pace of the under 20s doesn't suit him and he needs to play 1st Grade to show his wares - I don't know I'm just thinking out aloud.
He's not going to be much better when he comes back too after being out for six weeks he's going to be a little more tentative.
Lets hope we haven't seen the best of this kid as yet.
