For a change, Anthony Mundine was happy to stay out of the spotlight.

Perched on a chair in the corner of the Brisbane Broncos post-game changeroom, the WBA super middleweight boxing champion was letting his 20-year-old cousin Reece Robinson soak up the attention after his NRL debut.

The explosive Robinson, who Mundine says is powered by his "big Lebanese bum", was impressive on the flanks in the 48-12 rout of Penrith and almost had a try to show for it.

He climbed high in the 52nd minute from a cross-kick to the corner but the video referee ruled he fumbled the ball as he went for the grounding.

"It was a great experience to get out there and have a good run. It was a great victory as well. I was impressed with the game," Robinson said.

"Too bad I didn't get that try. I reckon it was (a try). They should have given it to me no matter what."

Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett, always one to keep a lid on his youngsters, was happy with Robinson's performance after rewarding his trial form with a run-on gig for round one.

"He said I was pretty solid. He was pretty impressed with my game. I was solid. I didn't make any mistakes. I got out there and did my job," Robinson said.

"I felt pretty comfortable out there."

Struggling to find his way at the Sharks alongside twin brother Travis, Robinson's NRL aspirations seemed in limbo until cousin Nathan Merritt, the South Sydney speedster, and former Balmain Tiger Wes Patten intervened.

They put in a call to Mundine, who had no hesitation in recommending Robinson to Bennett; a coach he believes has no peer when it comes to grooming young talents.

"(I had) no problem because I knew this was the best club for him. Wayne, the way he is with the younger guys, he fathers them and gets that mentality. I told Wayne how much natural ability he had," Mundine said.

"I knew the kid had talent and I did all that I could to help him. I knew Wayne was the best solution."

Inexperienced in life as well as league, Robinson is softly spoken but has an under-current of confidence that seems to run in the family.

"He's very quiet, very humble but underneath all that he's very confident," Mundine said.

"He knows what he can do as a football player."

I am just going off the commentary from Gorden Tallis yesterday, he said Meritt, but didn't mention Mundine as his cousin, just said Choc rang Tallis for Bennetts number to tell him about Reece, Merritt's cousin. Not saying it isn't the case, just going off what Tallis said.

Hey just saw on nrl.com that brisbane have released reece robinson and as far as im aware no club has picked him up.

If anyone remembers him from our juniors this kid was poised for big things. not sure why he has been released whether hes got injured or turned crap or if they needed more dosh for folau, but id like to c him come back. not sure how hed go at centre as im sure hes always played wing... very skillful kid tho, any thoughts???????

I think he will be playing for Brisbane Norths Devils (Wizard Cup) this year same as last year. Don't think we will see him in the N.R.L.

4 tries for Canberra last night...

Does anyone know what happened to his brother Travis?... Now *he* was a gun until that awful leg injury.

Never really rated him that much when he was with the Broncos. But did play well in a fantastic Raiders outfit last night.
