Young Bronco Reece Robinson set for NRL debut
Matt Marshall
March 02, 2008 11:00pm

BRONCOS coach Wayne Bennett has anointed little-known speedster Reece Robinson to make his NRL debut in round one against the Panthers.

Robinson appears to have edged himself in front of teenage flyer Gerard Beale in the race for a treasured wing spot for Brisbane's March 16 season opener.

The 20-year-old is the cousin of both boxing champion and former Bronco Anthony Mundine, and injured Bunnies flyer Nathan Merritt – and was recommended to Bennett by Mundine.

The former Cronulla and South Sydney junior turned in an eye-catching display against Redcliffe on Saturday while 17-year-old Beale, who played right centre, was also solid.

"Reece really showed something so I think he could have solved a problem for us," Bennett said.

"He played good, really good, he looked like he knew what he was doing. He's probably put his hand up a little bit for us."

Robinson and Beale could yet both earn wing spots against Penrith with established flyer Darius Boyd failing to impress against Redcliffe at fullback.

Boyd's experience is expected to earn him the nod – although Beale remains firmly in calculations.

"The other kid's pretty good as well (Beale), he's a good kid," Bennett said. "I was happy with him. He's only 17 and he missed most of last year with a reconstruction of his knee so he's only going to get better."

Saturday was Robinson's fourth successive pre-season trial for the Broncos – and he looked settled in a performance in which he set up a long-range try for Joel Moon and score Brisbane's matchwinning try.

Now if only Travis would step up. Would be handy considering he was considered the better of the two.

I know exactly what you are saying...Greenfield is another one, had a blinder for Souths in the Charity Shield on Saturday night.
u cant blame the sharks for getting rid of him,he had nothing at his time with the sharks.it just so happens now that someone has given him a massive kick up the date that has made him realise ur not in the game forever.i mean the last two years he has been back and fourth from sharks to souths and so on,and he prob got many backside wallops, but the last has prob finally sunk in.plus he loves an injury so dont expect a full season from him.

No, I don't blame the Sharks for getting rid of him Nulla, because he failed to make any impact whatsoever during his time with us. I am just wondering why Souths can get the best out of him, but we can't...it is not the first time we have seen a player leave our club and go on to bigger and better things, and it is something I find puzzling and particularly frustrating.

Hi, Just chasing a bit more info on this kid, they said he played flegg for us last year. Gone to broncos & they're really talking him up. Did any of you guys see him play, was he any good, if so, why we let him go. Theres a story about him in the Courier Mail website,
Cheers.

Reece is the twin brother of Travis, and played Flegg and Premier League for us last year. He is a prolific tryscoring winger who can can goals as well - I think Nikki said he was one of the real standouts in Premier League last season. No idea why we let him go - while I wish him luck at the Broncos I hope he doesn't go too well, or he'll go down in the book as yet another one that got away...:(

Depth is a wild beast.

You can sign up a heap of kids and say "We roll 20 deep, look at all our depth"

Then when you need to use them, realise that none of them are ready for first grade.

Or

You can have a few quality players ready and say "These guys are great we love them and they can cover our main squad"

Then when injuries set you're good to go.... unless of course more injuries strike... depth stops looking so deep.

Think about whom we lost and who we have:

Lost
Nielson
Raftery
R Robinson
Others?

Have
Pomeroy
Covell
Kearney
Simmons
Karl
Mitch
Misi
Kieran
Stapleton
Goodwin
Anderson
T Robinson
Cooper
Bukuya
Brackin Henry
Others I/we probably haven't even heard about
And not including Back rowers who cover center as well such as Williams and Stephenson.

(Open for everyone) Now without jumping at Simmons, tell me who you would let go to keep the three mentioned up top. Keeping in mind they have 10 mins first grade experience between them... and chances are unless you’re J0rdo, Nikki or Great White everything you know about them is second hand.

Clearly Ricky's depth concern lies in the first category.

Sadly we can't keep them all.

quality post mate. It displays a balanced observation of the situation. You cant keep everyone and Im sure that Ricky knows a bit about talent retention. There is probably a struck match between Reece and Travis and Im sure it came down to a roll of the dice.

id be pretty pissed if someone did it playing for us (unless we had the same score line)

I think you will find they are Nathan Merritt's cousin not Mundine's.

Great post kelpie. In hindsight should of kept him and brushed Brackin Henry, much promise not follow through.
