Journalist: "Was not throwing a punch a highlight of the night for you?"
Paul Gallen: "Well I haven't thrown one... yet"

35 min: Wonderful individual try by barnstorming prop Andrew Fifita, who races 55m to score against his old club. What an awesome sight Fifita is in full flight. SHARKS 24-0.

I just went for it. I saw open space, and I was one-on-one with the fullback. I thought I was going to get tackled, because it was 'Teddy'. I actually got it. I was just proud of it. To score a try from that far out for a front-rower . . . I didn't think I had the speed to get there, but I ended up doing it. I was thinking about jumping from 10 metres out. It was a bit wet out there and I was going to slide.

I told my family for years, I'd do it if I ever got into space . . . at the start of the year, my tries were little dive-overs, and someone was already jumping on me. Because I got into space, it came straight to my mind. 'Do it, do it, do it'. I ended up doing it . . . it was either that or the whipper-snipper. It just came to my head and I ended up doing it.

I wasn’t a big fan of the footy growing up. I wasn’t the type to sit there and watch a footy game. It was tough to match the faces to the names. Even McManus , I just met him (before Origin III) and I didn’t know who he was. I was asking ‘who’s James McManus?’ I know a few from playing against them and that but to be honest I didn’t know who he was. Everyone’s saying he’s top tryscorer…

Back in the 1980s, famed supercoach Jack Gibson said that waiting for Cronulla to win the premiership was like leaving the porch light on for Harold Holt. This quote got bandied around a lot during grand final week, but I didn't even know who Harold Holt was or that he had drowned in 1967! Even when Paul Gallen grabbed the NRL trophy on grand final night and said Cronulla fans can turn off their porch light now, I had no idea what he was talking about.

“The halfback for Cronulla was a fella called Steve Hansard. Peter and Steve went to school together, played football together, went out together. Steve was the halfback in that 1978 game. With about five minutes to go, a scrum went down in front of the sticks at Manly’s end. The Manly halfback put it straight into the second row. Steve said to (referee) Greg Hartley, ‘Sir! Second row!’ And Hartley said to him, ‘You wouldn’t want to win a grand final on a penalty kick, would you?’ We could have beaten Manly, but we couldn’t beat Hartley.”
- Jack Stewart (late Sharks President) on the 1978 Grand Final
