FIVE IN A ROW FOR PREMIER LEAGUE SHARKS
The Premier League Sharks added to their recent winning streak with a 28-16 victory over the Wests Magpies in their match at Toyota Park on Friday night.
The Sharks had to battle hard to get the better of a gutsy Magpies side in the final quarter of the contest, coming back from a 16-10 deficit before asserting their authority in the closing 15 minutes of the match.
The Sharks were well-served by new half back Anthony Watts, a former Rooster who is a recent addition to the Sharks line up, hooker Luke Sant and Brett Finn at lock.
Also encouraging was the return from injury of forward Phil Leuluai, with the strong running prop getting plenty of game time and playing himself back into a bit of form.
The Sharks started fast when Watts strolled through a yawning gap in the Magpies defence to touch down adjacent to the posts.
Only a short time later the Sharks made it 10-0 in the seventh minute of the match when Bryson Goodwin crashed over out wide.
Wests responded with an intercept try to winger Chance Bunce to make the score 10-6, with the Sharks then becoming their own worst enemies with a serious of errors inside their own end of the field. Finally they cracked giving up a try under the posts to a grubber kick and the teams would go to half time with Wests in front by 12-10.
The Magpies went further ahead when they capitalised on a glut of possession to score out wide, before the Sharks were able to work their way back into the game when Watts crossed for his second four pointer of the night. The Goodwin conversion made it 16-all and it was ‘game on’ with 20 minutes of the match remaining.
Gaining in confidence the Sharks lifted in the final period of the match, controlling the ball and much of the field position, with further tries to Jacob Selmes and Dane Nielsen giving them a 28-16 win, albeit by a slightly flattering scoreline.
With the win for the Premier League Sharks, their fifth in a row, sees them move to 12 points and towards the pointy end of the competition ladder.
