PAUL Gallen admits he went into this Fight For Life charity boxing event with an attitude he wanted to challenge himself but he wasn't taking it too seriously.
Then last Saturday morning Gallen picked up his copy of The Daily Telegraph and read what his opponent Hika Elliot had planned for the NSW State of Origin captain.
Suddenly, Gallen said, it dawned on him: "This is real."
"Up until that point, for me, it was a charity-based event and I thought we are going to get in there and hit each other but I suppose I looked at it more as a bit of fun and a bit of a project for me to do away from footy," he explained.
"But when those comments were made and I saw it ... I wouldn't say it made me angry but it made me realise this bloke is going to get in and he is actually going to try and knock me out."
Gallen will feature on a card this Saturday night in Auckland that also includes fellow NRL stars Willie Mason and Greg Bird, along with Lauryn Eagle.
It will be televised live in Australia on Main Event and is being hailed as the toughest ever Fight For Life promotion.
Every bout promises to be fair dinkum contests but there is no question Gallen has hand-picked the toughest opponent and he revealed it was actually his decision to fight Elliot instead of Bird's opponent, Rene Ranger.
While Ranger has a reputation in New Zealand as a bloke who can handle himself, Elliott is said to be a 115kg fighting machine who is unbeaten in 62 karate fights.
Gallen was sitting beside Bird at today's press conference when he quipped: "Ben Pomeroy came up with the best line so far.
"We have been known as the Bruise Brothers but if we get knocked out we are going to be the Snooze Brothers. Let's hope that doesn't happen."
Asked if he was feeling fear, Gallen conceded: "Mate, I'm not too afraid to say I am a bit scared, yeah. No doubt about it.
"I am scared every time I walk on to the footy field but I suppose it is just the way you use that emotion inside you to get by.
"With rugby league, I am used to it, I know what to do.
"But with this I don't. I haven't done it before so I suppose that is where the nervousness comes into it.
"With this I walk into the ring knowing I could get knocked out but I don't really know how to handle it because I have never done it before.
"I don't know what I am going to do if he hits me hard enough that it is going to rattle me a bit.
"That is something that I am going to have to work out pretty quick."
