NRL Round 26 Teams
Adam McBride
August 31, 2010

The race for the 2010 NRL Premiership is narrowed down after this weekend to the final eight who face sudden death through September and October.

With eight matches to play there are 10 teams vying for the honour of post-season action.

For Brisbane and South Sydney, the finals have come earlier than anticipated with both in a desperate situation of needing to win their matches and rely on other results also going in their favour.

The Broncos open the weekend when they host the eighth placed Canberra Raiders. Darren Lockyer has put the Brisbane team, and his long term future, ahead of risking his rib injury to further damage in the blockbuster elimination match.

The Raiders meanwhile have recalled forward Glen Buttriss in place of injured skipper Alan Tongue who will miss two weeks with a calf strain.

Gold Coast backrower Anthony Laffranchi is poised to return from a shoulder injury for the Titans blockbuster clash with the Wests Tigers on Friday night.

The Titans need to win to hang onto a top four spot, while the Tigers have confirmed a top four finish, and home final, regardless of the result – though will be out to claim the double chance and secure second place.

Super Saturday opens at Parramatta when the Eels take on the Warriors in Nathan Cayless’ last first grade match after 258-games over 14 seasons.

Despite not being able to lift the premiership trophy, Cayless leaves the NRL as the most capped skipper for one club – having led the Eels in 220 matches.

The Warriors are another team assured of finals action despite the result this weekend, though will be looking to finish as high up the table as possible.

Joel Moon has been recalled to the squad poised for the trip to Sydney West.

The Panthers and Sharks renew hostilities on Saturday night at the foot of the mountain with the Shire-based club in unchanged and buoyed after the upset win over the Titans last weekend.

Penrith meanwhile were below par last night despite grinding out a courageous win over the Bulldogs however have lost captain Petero Civoniceva for two weeks after he was sent off and suspended for two weeks on a grade three dangerous tackle.

Tim Grant comes in to fill the big shoes of the skipper in the forward pack, while Wade Graham replaces Luke Walsh at half back.

The Sydney Roosters travel to Townsville assured of a finals place though no doubt looking to possibly snatch fourth spot if other results are in its favour.

While it appears unlikely, defeat for both the Titans and Warriors leaves the door ajar for top four and home final on Friday week.

Anthony Minichiello is back in the Roosters’ line-up, while Martin Kennedy and Lopini Paea have been named on the bench.

Just one change for the home side Cowboys with Anthony Watts replacing Shannon Gallant on its interchange bench.

Melbourne Storm take to the field for the last time in season 2010 on Sunday afternoon in front of what is likely to be a full house following the kind gesture of selling tickets last week for only one dollar.

All money raised will go towards various charities including this weekend’s beneficiary the Ovarian Cancer foundation.

On the field, Greg Inglis and Brett Finch return for their final games in Storm colours, replacing Gareth Widdop and Jesse Bromwich.

Scott Dureau and Cameron Ciraldo meanwhile come into the Knights’ squad for Kurt Gidley and Shannon McDonnell.

NRL Sunday continues at Brookvale Oval when the Sea Eagles host the Bulldogs without Glenn Stewart, suspended for four matches on a grade five striking charge.

Josh Perry comes into the squad at lock in place of Stewart, while the Bulldogs have recalled second rower Michael Hodgson after he missed the Panthers match with a hamstring strain.

St George-Illawarra and South Sydney complete the weekend on Sunday night with the Dragons welcoming back Beau Scott, after two weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring strain.

Eddy Pettybourne has been named in the Rabbitohs side after missing a week through suspension, while Michael Crocker replaces Jason Clark at lock.
