Yeah I know but I just don't hear it during his commentary.

I honestly don't know how you could miss it.

He gets actually angry. He sounds like an angry old man, fussing over some **** because he didn't understand the rules.

I used to like him but he's losing the plot.

Don't know mate, maybe I just have my head in the sand but I don't notice him commentate our games any differently to other games.

He lashed Fifita hard when he did his flop/crusher earlier in the season like it was the most intentionally dangerous thing he's seen in sport.
He was really carrying on about something yesterday too although I can't remember what at the moment.

He didn't like that the refs knew the rules and correctly penalised a voluntary tackle.

It was the penalty we received on halftime.

The penalty was because the Wests player played the ball when he wasn't held. None of the commentators picked up on it and thought it was for incorrect play the ball, which it wasn't.

He also went nuts when the ref gave us that bum call saying Chad stripped it when Momorovski dropped it. So that's not really anti Sharks.

And if a group of Sharks fans trashed his Mum's house, well, yeah no ****, I could see how he'd be angry about that.

I'm not sure if he's actually got a bias or not, but he is often an annoying commentator. So is Anasta. They 'blow up' at things because they've missed something crucial, and they dead set act like they were personally affronted.

Finchy blew up pretty well at the Young eye gouge(s), belonged more on one of the panel shows than commentating. Was kind of funny but I'd rather the commentators be a bit more controlled - they aren't there for opinions so much.
They can agree/disagree etc but keep your cool and don't get caught up on it.

Shout and argue on the panel shows.

To be fair on the commentators I don’t think they actually realised what the penalty was for.

I audibly laughed when he played it, like I knew straight away he'd done the wrong thing even before the penalty was blown. These guys are literally paid to commentate Rugby League and were scratching their heads.

Seconded , can't stand him and if anything ever goes against the Rooster, heaven help .
Need a Sharks try from 7 tackle set against Roosters that was meant to be a normal set .

Yeah - fair call. I was the same. If us two know the rule it’s probably reasonable to expect them to know it.

Tbh I don’t think most commentators have much of an idea of the actual rules outside of the ones everyone knows or the ones that have been highlighted recently.

Couldn't he just claim that he was passing the ball to the player behind him in an unusual way? As long as he didn't knock the ball on couldn't the play the ball be regarded as a strange backwards kick?

Yeah agreed, and they don't articulate properly what their issues are sometimes. I don't like how they conflate disagreeing with a rule and being angry that a referee correctly called it. They flip flop between wanting refs to have discretion or to not have it. They blame refs for doing their job correctly, and then blame them for not doing it. It's really stupid and reactionary of them.

I often wonder what people new to the sport would think. They'd of course be gullible and assume the commentators are experts, but they'd also potentially get a bad impression.

No, the reason the rule exists is that it otherwise leads to touch football style tactics where you go for a hitup, get tackled intentionally and get a quick play the ball while the other side is almost entirely offside.

Billy Slater used to sort of half do it and get away with it. He'd get down to his knees then immediately fight his way to his feet and play the ball. The getting down to his knees part being effectively a voluntary tackle. I hated that he got away with it and that no one was even talking about it. It's almost as bad as wrestling. It's just more manipulating the ruck outside of the spirit of the game to get an unfair advantage.

Ah so it was for a voluntary tackle not a premature play the ball.

Aaron Raper was the king of this when he was playing for us.
