Doubt it. I suspect the Club would have paid out an agreed figure for each year left on his contract which equals no cash left

Question

Would the pay out be included in the salary cap.

Now if we have any more cash, that is a separate question.

I don't think there was a payout mate. Besides paying his wages up until the release I'm sure both parties agreed to go their seperate ways. Realistically we should have all of Bird's money available (around 360k) in the cap for this year.

1 Mill does sound like a lot but when you compare it to what NFL clubs and English Premier League clubs need for their roster, its really small potatoes. Of course they have a higher population to get the funding but you just wish there was a millionaire or billionaire somewhere who is looking for a nice little tax write off. Surely there must be some Sharks fans in the Cronulla or Woolooware area who have a spare million. I know if I was earning the kind of money these people do and had it in the bank I would be down on Barry Pierce's doorstep straight away.

I would of been on BP's welcome mat the day after GB was stood down. Bradford wouldn't know what they missed out on.

I dream of the day when I have a large financial stake in my Club. If for nothing more than to come on here and stir you buggers up. Stuff like:

"Hey peaches, I 'encouraged' the board to make Simmo a life member and re-release the Cronulla Immortals with Simmo as Immortal #10, shifting David Peachey to #11."

I've heard that there are a few millionaires out there for most clubs, just waiting to be asked...

That constant media speculation has been going on since I can remember and thats a bloody long time.

The only time I will be worried about our club is if they sell the land off and then spend all the money and are in the Red.

I don't see that any time soon.

when the club borrowed that money from the bank it was because they were still owed the money from the NRL from last season and it was to pay staff wages, at the time all clubs were owed the money, there is a lot of difference between broke and having a cash flow problem.

Bird was I believed paid out an additional 40k as part of the release on top of the 100k odd he had been paid since suspended in Aug 08. That 40k is part of the salary cap too.

In saying that, it is a lot better off then it could have been.

It does mean however the end of the year we have 250-300k odd to use towards a player for 2010, which is a great thing.

I know we need outside backs, although some good ones coming through. If not, that money could go to signing a quality hooker and the best candidate would be Nathan Friend who is clubless at the end of 2009.

Clubless and clueless. He's a hard little worker but he's pretty one dimensional, which is fine when you play with magicians like Prince and Campbell. I'd like someone a little more creative. If Tony Caine and/or Seu Seu don't make the next step by the time Hughes ventures and that money is used to lure a quality hooker I'd offer Isaac his jersey back.

Todd Carney is still looking for a club too and we all know Barrett isn't a long term option.

Hunt can cover all spots, fullback, 5/8, hooker he is the Man to throw the money at, and with the current group of players we have it would be a pretty good looking place to come and play at for a current SOO and OZ rep

FMD I am getting sick of us talking up buying bad boys like Maitua and Hunt etc who's off field behaviour at times is no better than Greg Bird. Yes we want quality players but if the best are off field idiots and we buy them why the hell did we let bird go?

Ok Im calm now. Got that off my chest
