North Cronulla, Elouera dominate

NORTH Cronulla and Elouera crews dominated the first round of the 2010 Sydney Branch Boat Series at Elouera Beach on Saturday, held in small, clean one- metre swells.

The tiny waves of the morning saw the event pushed back to an afternoon start, with stronger sets whipped up by a strengthening north-easter on an ebbing tide.

In the open men's division after their four rounds, North Cronulla Gold (23 points) edged out Coogee A by two points, with Elouera Zumba another two behind. Grant Wilkinson's crew dominated the open women's division, with Elouera Wilko — crewed by a number of mothers and more experienced women "boaties" — finishing on 21 points, well ahead of Coogee.

North Cronulla Blue Colts won the men's reserves by just one point from Era (coming second on countback) and Elouera Ghostriders, both on 24 points.

In the under 23s, North Cronulla Blue Colts won the male division with 26 points, four ahead of Cronulla with Wanda A on 14.

In the women's, Elouera Ghostriders dominated with 26 points from North Cronulla Mick's Chicks (19) and then Coogee (15).

The next round will be held on Saturday November 13, from 8am at Elouera Beach.

¦ A number of Bate Bay competitors are taking part in this weekend's Coolangatta Gold, on the Gold Coast.

They are led by Cronulla's Kellogg's ironman series competitor, Mark Simpson, and Nicholas Brunette, plus Wanda's Ben Squires, with North Cronulla's Adam Calo in the under 19s.

Among the masters, Elouera's Brent McKinnon is again backing up (30-39 years), as is Shane Whittaker from North Cronulla and Elouera's Dean Parry and Chris Panckhurst (40+ years).
