I was just reading this on the select website.

https://www.selectaustralia.com.au/news/detail.php?id=64

That they will no longer be making the NRL cards.

This sucks as I remember I used to collect theses and swap them with my mates.

I wonder who will pick it up? Topps? Or is there anyone else out their?

I have copied the link plus the writing here and below.

Your thoughts?

12 December 2012
The end of our NRL era and Merry Xmas to all

Select Australia will no longer be producing NRL collector cards with the 2012 season being our last series of cards.

We chose to relinquish the licence and will cease selling NRL products as of the 31st January, 2013. So if you wish to purchase any NRL related product from us please do so by this date.

Select would like to acknowledge the great partnership we had with the NRL for the last 12 years. To all our loyal collectors of Select’s NRL range – thank you for your years of dedication and collection of our products. Your support and constant feedback was always appreciated.

We sincerely thank you for your loyalty and wish to inform you that even though we are not producing any further series of NRL cards, we will still be honouring redemptions relating to our NRL signatures until further notice. Please follow the instructions on the reverse of the card to redeem.

We wish all our collectors a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe holiday period.

We will be closed from Friday 21st December, and reopen on Monday 7th January, 2013.

All the best with your collecting.

Many thanks

The team at Select Australia

I'm a long way past collecting footy cards but its a shame for the kids coming through, from recollection the cards have been getting more & more expensive over the yrs, I'm sure even allowing for generalthings going up cards went up more than most.

I was at the back of the sheds waiting With the Missus ( she wanted a photo with Matty Bowen, a well spoken and quiet player) and I saw several kids and adults with these cards getting signatures on them, which I remember kids would used to do, (well I would of done it and I know others would be in the same boat).

Still if you get them signed and are of a good player or a a set of the team, then would be big money don't track, as memobillia.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but signed footy cards aren't worth much. Those adults you see getting them signed? Straight to eBay, and a flooded market.

As for the demise of footy cards.. the rights are just being transferred to a different company. Not sure which one, but the rumours of the death of footy cards is vastly overstated.

I have been thinking about this for a while.

I think the daily telegraph would have something to do with that

We used to collect footy cards since we were kids but I still just collect the cards
From the telegraph.

And at most games and fan days you see most kids with their
Telegraph footy card folder.

That would shatter in your mouth and give you a cut at the top of your mouth that never healed.

Miss those days.

I bought 2 or 3 packs last year when I was in a 7/11 and had spare change. Didn't even get a Sharks player at all. Gee up.

a new company is coming in to do it

The new company is ESP, they did release some cards late last year (international, Origin cards), they are post in images
http://www.sharksforever.com/forums/showthread.php?101121-Paul-Gallen-2012-Cards

some examples of the Gallen cards. Last 3 cards are from the new company

This new company has a 5 year contract.

I still love the cards and hopefully get them all signed by past and present players, but never sell them. they sit nicely in a folder

It's great to meet the player and have them sign the card for you (past and present).

They were like $8 per packet yeah? Can't see parents going nuts over that.

They did have good redemptions though, like actual game day footys

Yeah they did, the new ones won't want be that expensive otherwise they will sit for a while

They will probably do what select did, have a basic release then followed by a selective second release.

Although select have been good over the years, the new company will have a lot to live up to

Yes they do. But if you look at baseball cards , they might try using their design

I would say that design is a one off, due to them being released while select were finishing off the 2012 cards.

Will have to wait untill they show a sneak peak
