As a kid, Nicho knows a few things to be true.
Everyone calls him Nicho, instead of ‘Nicholas’.
He loves the sport of rugby league.
And he is Aboriginal - but he hasn’t always known what that means.
Then one day at school, Nicho sees his friend covered in white paint and practising a special dance.
Nicho asks him to teach him the dance too . . . and that’s when everything changes.
This is the inspiring story of rugby league star Nicho Hynes, who grew up to find his passion when he found his people.

I'm interested in the idea of what Nicho's natural game is. I don't know that anyone really knows what it is... He and Fitz included. I genuinely don't think it's a Munster or Keary. Probably a Drinkwater... But it we're talking halves, maybe a Deardon would be a better model.

There is no such thing as a natural game. Players have technical strengths and weaknesses and things they are experienced or inexperienced at. Over time a player can turn a weakness into a strength with experience and coaching... or not. Based on all evidence both coach and player are aware of Nicho's strengths and weaknesses, and have a plan in place to make him better.

The best halfback/player in the world right now was bagged for his lack of ball-playing skills when he came in to the NRL, and he says that ballplaying is not something that has ever felt natural to him. He had a bunch of strengths which got him by for a while, and he developed his ball-playing skills on the job with experience and some great coaching.

Natural game is a myth perpetuated by TV people and fans who learned the game from TV. What is important is how can we play to best utilize this player's strengths? and how can the players around him compliment those strengths or make up for his weaknesses?

I agree with what you're saying, but I think you're a bit hung up on the wording. I believe when people say that they are just referring to what comes easy or they find easy/what is more the players strength or go to style. Not that it's a natural talent.

I know what people are getting at. I disagree that players can be pigeonholed like this.

Coach identifies his players’ strengths and weaknesses, and plays in a way that both accommodates these and pushes the players to improve.

People act like the coach reads a 1992 handbook on how positions work, then lines his players up and pick the ones who best fit.

This is true, but its not incorrect to suggest that some coaches pamper to some players allowing them more freedom or choices than they would otherwise afford other players.

Am I necessarily suggesting this is definitely the case. No.
Could it be possible. Anything is possible.

Yeah, no disagreement there. Just because a player has their strengths doesn't mean that's their only role or way they can contribute.

No, unless the only evidence of this is watching 80 minutes a week. You'd need to know what's going on behind the scenes to make this call as there are so many moving parts putting pressure on coaches including administration and agents. I've seen nothing to suggest that this is the case for us.

Are you suggesting it doesn’t happen?

I didn’t say it’s necessarily happening in this instance.
But it’s also, not impossible

There are also some natural formed 'blinkers' in the workplace that occurs when you are in and around the same thing day by day.

The amount of times I've done safety audits at a workplace and find the most basic things that people on site walk past and don't recognise. If I took them to another site they would pick it up in 5 minutes.

I'm sure this happens at NRL clubs as well.
