Can't argue with any of this (I actually have the Pats going 15-1) except the part in bold. Everyone goes on about Bill Belichick as if he's a draft genius - but they actually had a pretty lousy draft this year.
Nate Solder is very raw - they drafted him as a future left tackle but he's not going to be playing there for some years. He's only been playing offensive tackle since his second year of college. They drafted two running backs even though they didn't really have a need at the position - Law Firm and Woodhead aren't bad players and they throw most of the time anyway. And they still don't have a pass rushing OLB.
That said, I'm the guy who once pointed out that questioning Belichick is like asking a Mafia hitman if he could shoot out yr kneecaps more effectively. You know he's gonna get the best out of Fat Albert and Ocho and get that defense up to scratch with the offense.
I'm actually working on a massive NFL preview for my new blog as we speak.
I agree that Solder wasn't particularly a good choice but, I think they picked up a few quality value picks.
Ras I Dowling was a 1st round talent that dropped due to character issues and they drafted him 33rd overall. Ras-I and Devin McCourty could become an elite duo at CB for the Pats. That would be a beastley secondary with Pat Chung and James Sanders.
Ryan Mallet will learn a helluva lot in the Belicheck system. Especially with Brady still at the helm for another 3-4 years, that may give Mallet enough time to progress and eventually take over the QB spot Aaron Rodgers style.
Marcus Cannon was a 1st-2nd round prospect that fell to the 5th round due to his cancer problems. His cancer is treatable and is already on the road to recovery and that Pats picked up steal. Cannon is the type of big athletic O-lineman that succeds in the Patriots system. Very agile.
Stevan Ridley looked very impressive in some of the Patriots pre-season games too.
