New under-18 coach to be picked
20th December 2010

VB GOLD Group 2 will select the under-18 coach to replace Peter Barrett after the close of applications on January 18.

All candidates should send their details to chief administrator Jim Anderson and must have at least a current Level One coaching certificate.

During his four-year term Barrett was elevated each season to the North Coast Division/Oxley Pioneers role where he won two Country Rugby League championship titles, finished runner-up in another and only missed this season’s final by a whisker.

“We might have been hampered this year by a lot of younger players chosen with less-than-the-usual experience,” Barrett said.

“That being the case, there was a big lift in the quality of football played during the season and I’m confident the standard is on the rise again.

“With that experience and an extra six months for the kids to fill out, I reckon the selectors are going to have a really good talent base to work with.”

Barrett said the players chosen to represent the Group don’t receive enough kudos under the present structure and to compensate for this introduced a “North versus South” trial to give more youngsters an opportunity to catch the eye.

Group 2 representative coordinator Greg White predicted the system would remain in place.

“Good kids can fall through the net because the selections are done so early in the year which is not an ideal situation and I’ll suggest to the new coach we continue with this format,” he said.

“But we have a starting list to work with of players who came to the fore in 2010.

“Kids like Harley Gore, Tom Sheaves and Myles Bruce who played in the grand final are right up there, providing they are still the right age and haven’t been snapped up already by the NRL clubs.”
