New design, new era

The new design for Wellington's junior rugby league is receiving national acclaim and Cowboys president Graham Blackhall is intent on involving the whole community.

"We would like everybody, including local businesses, to be involved with this new design and this can be something Wellington can be proud of," Blackhall said.

The maroon and white style will remain but with there will be some very artistic changes.

"We have incorporated an Indigenous look on the jersey and shorts and even the Country Rugby League were impressed by it, and also Group 11," Blackhall said.

"I hope the senior teams will also take the jersey as their new design for 2011, but that's a decision that will be made at upcoming committee meetings."

The design of the new jersey was done in collabartion with a local Aboriginal artist.

"The artist who has designed the new design for the jerseys is a former local footballer and is highly regarded for his work," Blackhall said. "He wants to keep a low profile though and has produced the design for the jersey for nothing to support the junior league in the district."

Blackhall also said he would be stepping down as the first grade coach this season.

"I won't be coaching the first grade Cowboys this season, so positions are open for new mentors in 2011," he said.

"I really have to consider my time, what with my work, being president of the junior league and touch football as well.

It all keeps me busy and it was all too much. But I will continue to support the Cowboys in all forms."

The junior league is also on the hunt for new coaches this season from under sevens right up to 16s, with the closing date for coaching offers January 21.

"I think we can find some really good coaches," Blackhall said.

"I want the community to come with us and support the kids. The proud new jersey and the talent we have here augers well for a bumper year."

Registration day will be on February 7 for junior rugby league, with the Cronulla Sharks visiting Wellington on the day to help with skills and training.

"We have had a great response from the major NRL Clubs, including the Roosters, the Knights and the Sharks," Blackhall said.

"They are very aware that we have an amazing depth of talent in our junior footy and this will give us the chance to really promote their talents to them."

Blackhall has also been working with one of Wellington's most talented indigenous players. Lewis Stanley is preparing for the All Star under 16 match between the Kooris side and the Queensland Murrays.

"We only begun really working hard yesterday but Lewis is really turning it on and will be a sight to see that night," Blackhall said.

The Gold Coast will again host the All Star match on February 12.

The district's junior competition will start off with a bang as Wellington hosts the first round in March.
