SYDNEY has emerged as a leading contender to host the NBL's pre-season tournament next month to possibly coincide with the league's re-launch for 2013-14 and beyond.

Plans to stage the event, featuring all eight NBL clubs, in Port Hedland or Dandenong appear to have hit hurdles making Sydney an attractive option.

For starters, it means two teams - the Kings and Wollongong Hawks - would not need air fares, it is central for the remaining clubs and an easy port of call for reigning champion New Zealand.

The WA Government had shown interest in financially assisting a pre-season tournament in Port Hedland in the north-west of the state but some of the proposed funding has not eventuated.

It also was considered by some to perhaps be a little too "out of the way" for the NBL at a time when it is trying to rebuild and reconnect with mainstream popularity.

The WNBL will stage its pre-season tournament at Dandenong Stadium from September 20-22.

Last year the NBL and WNBL both staged their pre-season tournaments in Dandenong, creating the unique situation where all 17 elite-level basketball teams in Australia were under one roof.

A lack of publicity in Melbourne though meant it was anything but the spectacle or launch the NBL had envisioned, making it unlikely to revisit the format in this, its breakaway season from under the auspices of Basketball Australia.

"We're exploring the possibility of playing it in Sydney," interim NBL chief executive officer Steve Dunn said today.

"That way it could coincide with the re-launch of the league.

"We'd be looking at bringing in past champions as well to assist us - people such as Leroy Loggins and Cal Bruton for example. "

The NBL clubs already have locked in the same dates as the WNBL - September 20-22 - for their pre-season tournament but the showcase also would involve greater engagement with the public in the days leading up to the matches.

"We have a few ideas on the drawing board and we'll release those to the public as we confirm them," Dunn said.

Sydney to host New Mexico's Lobos in pre-season tip-off

NO-ONE has quite called him "The Franchise" yet but new Sydney Kings signing AJ Ogilvy assuredly is the man the NBL club will be building around.

Ogilvy tomorrow will make his long-awaited big-time debut when he leads the Kings against visiting University of New Mexico's Lobos at Bankstown as the NBL's preseason officially gets underway.

Sydney-born Ogilvy, 25 and 211cm, already has runs on the board after playing professionally with Besiktas in Turkey, Valencia in Spain and Brose Baskets in Germany before pulling on a Kings singlet.

Recruited out of the AIS, the mobile centre had a strong college career at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee from 2007-2010 before nominating for the NBA draft.

While he went undrafted, Ogilvy played in the Pro Summer League for the Chicago Bulls before landing with Besiktas in Turkey at the same time troubled NBA superstar Allen Iverson played for the club.

Kings coach Shane Heal said Ogilvy had the potential to be the best big-man since dual-Sydney championship winner, 2004 league MVP, Larry Sengstock Medallist, triple Olympian and immediate past Boomers captain Matt Nielsen.

Neilsen was one of Ogilvy's idols growing up.

"I just think for his size at 6-11, the mobility and the touch that he has - he's just an outstanding player," Heal said.

Bankstown Stadium already is sold out tomorrow for the match-up against the Lobos, a college which first grew to prominence in Australia when future triple-NBA championship-winner Luc Longley played there.

The touring University of New Mexico team also will boast Aussies, with Cameron Bairstow and Hugh Greenwood in the line-up.

Power forward Bairstow impressed for Australia as it clinched the silver medal at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia, after winning the Stankovic Cup in China.

Tasmanian guard Greenwood, a 191cm tyro, will prove a big headache for the Kings who will be without import playmaker Jesse Sanders and his back-up Shaun Gleeson, who is injured.

Brad Hill, Kyle Armour and Ben Allen will join returning trio James Harvey, Kevin White and Tom Garlepp, along with new development players John Machum and Louis Brandt.

Second Kings import, Charles Carmouche, like Sanders, is yet to arrive in Australia.

I became a big fan of Corin Henry, I was shattered we let him go.

He looked good before he got injured imo.
