AFTER a lucrative off-season recruitment campaign Southcity has been hailed as the "dark horse" in the race for 2010 Group Nine premiership.

The newest recruit to the Bulls, former Cronulla Sharks player Nathan Vagg, has further bolstered the fledgling Wagga club's playing ranks as the new season fast approaches.

While many Group Nine clubs are desperately seeking a suitable front-rower, the Bulls' prayers have been answered through the experienced forward.

After a year away from the game, Vagg has linked with the Bulls and is excited to be stepping back onto the rugby league field.

"I didn't play last year," he said.

"I played with the Engadine Dragons in 2008, which is a local competition in Cronulla and before that I was with the Burley Bears.

"A few years ago I was playing with the Cronulla Sharks in reserve grade and Jersey Flegg and I had two games in first grade."

Vagg admitted he was enticed to the country for a change of lifestyle.

"I really just wanted a change," he said.

"In Sydney there is so much travelling and my partner is from Wagga, so we have links with Wagga."

Vagg has started an electrician apprenticeship in the city.

Southcity captain-coach Greg Lynch said he was happy to have Vagg on board and expected he would be an asset to the club.

"We needed a front-rower and Nathan is very experienced," he said.

Southcity commenced its pre-season training on Saturday with a gruelling run up The Rock hill in the sweltering heat.

"The core group of players are here, which is great to see," Lynch said.

According to Lynch, it is likely the club will announce at least two more recruits as early as this week.

While the identities of the two players remain unknown, they are firmly in negotiations with the club.

Lynch is confident Southcity, with its new recruits, is in a strong position heading into the 2010 season and is adamant the club will be firmly in the hunt for a shot at the premiership.

The Bulls officially kicked off training last night and will continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays from now on.
