Coincidence or catalyst? Either way you look at it, South Sydney winger Nathan Merritt has not scored a try since blowing up over his NSW City Origin snubbing two months ago.

Last year's leading NRL tryscorer bagged seven tries in the opening seven rounds of the competition but still missed out on City selection, to current NSW winger Jarryd Hayne and Bulldogs sharpshooter Hazem El Masri.

He publicly claimed racism was one of the reasons behind his snubbing, but since then he has hardly proven the selectors wrong, failing to cross the line in a six-game tryscoring drought.

And Merritt's version of white line fever has coincided with the Rabbitohs' slump, with just one win in the past six weeks and no tries last week in their tough 14-2 loss to Manly.

But South Sydney coach Jason Taylor is confident the Rabbitohs' misfiring attack will click into gear in the near future, hopefully by Sunday afternoon when the Bunnies host Cronulla at Telstra Stadium.

"We've just got to keep working hard at that stuff," he said.

"We are really heading in the right direction but we've got to learn faster. We're just not finishing off the breaks we are making and we have to compete with the top teams.

"(But) we're improving each week.

"It takes time but it's got to happen now."

Cronulla, too, have problems with their attack.

They failed to cross against the New Zealand Warriors last week and coach Ricky Stuart has identified offence as an area of their game that needs to be addressed immediately if they are to develop into contenders this year.

The Sharks will be buoyed by the return of centre Fraser Anderson after a dislocated shoulder suffered in round 12 while in-form forward Lance Thompson is back after three weeks on the sidelines with a knee problem, compensating for the loss of suspended NSW Origin prospect Paul Gallen.

Adding further ammunition to the Sharks' fire this week is the Cronulla players still smarting over their round three loss earlier this year to Souths.

That 26-16 defeat remains the heaviest of Cronulla's season and the Sharks would love nothing more than to return the favour at Souths' home ground.

RABBITOHS players have come up with an amusing new nickname for winger Nathan Merritt - "The Koala". The Boys in the Burrow thought it was apt because of Merritt's prolific sleep patterns.

"He grabs a pillow in between session and goes and has a nap in the video room," one Souths player told us. "That bloke can fall asleep anywhere."

HE FAMOUSLY got the Rabbitohs out of jail with a booming field goal against the Tigers last year, but Nathan Merritt last week visited an establishment there is no breaking out of.

Teaming up with partner in crime Beau Champion, the Bunnies duo travelled out to Long Bay jail to spend some time with the inmates and offer some encouraging words.

"We played some touch football and spent some time with them," said Champion. "It was a real eye-opener. I think they got a bit out of having us there and hopefully we were able to help them."

Souths co-owner Russell Crowe was planning on making the trip, but his busy schedule - and perhaps daydreaming about Greg Inglis in cardinal and myrtle - kept him away. We are also told Peter Garrett was there a day earlier belting out a couple of Midnight Oil hits for the inmates and no doubt trying to buy a few more votes for Labor.

The jail visit was organised by Souths Cares, who are doing some terrific work in the community.

In a bit of shocking news this morning, Nathan has collapsed and is currently on life support. Thinking of him and his family during this time.

Always liked Merritt, seemed to be a good bloke both on and off the field.

“Former South Sydney winger Nathan Merritt is fighting for his life in a Sydney hospital.

Merritt, who scored 154 tries over 237 games for the Rabbitohs, was found unresponsive on Friday afternoon.

He was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown.

Family, friends and teammates have been told of Merritt’s condition.

It is understood he is on life support.

He was staying with his aunty when he collapsed.

Merritt’s condition is listed as serious.

Merritt, who retired from the NRL after 237-games in 2014, ranks among the greatest Rabbitohs to have ever played for the Pride of the League.

His 219-games for Souths places him fourth on the list of all-time games played for the club.

His 151-tries ranks him third on the all-time club try-scorers list, while his 673-points sits in sixth position for most-ever points scored at Souths.

Merritt twice topped the NRL’s try scoring charts – remarkably in 2006 when the Rabbioths finished with the wooden spoon and in 2011 when they were 10th.

The Redfern-born star also represented at the highest level.

Merritt played one game for NSW State of Origin in 2013, two Australian Prime Minister’s XIII appearances, two City Origin appearances and three NRL Indigenous All Stars jerseys.

He was awarded the Preston Campbell Medal for his Man of the Match performance in the 2012 Indigenous All Stars game.”
