i know this isnt sharks related, but it once again highlights the disgraceful level of officiating in the NRL. the cowboys having 14 men on the field. how does this even happen in the modern game? where video technology and all manner of things have turned decison making into a lottery, how can a simple interchange be cocked up? i know refs are human, and they are going to make errors, but the buck has to stop somewhere, and the NRL has to start lookng at itself officiating wise. if anyone agrees with me, can we please get a more formal voicing if opinions to the heads of the league, and fix the game before it falls into a total shambles

It is beyond me how they could screw that one up, given that the interchange players now have to hand their "boarding pass" directly to the sideline official before being allowed on to the field of play.

But more importantly, what effect does it have on the tipping comp if the Cows have to hand back their competition points from that game???

well the player cant be entirley blamed, he hands the card to the ref on the sideline, he should know when to take the bloody thing and let him on the field

and this isnt just a comment about this particular incident, its about the standard of refereing in general, jsut highlighting one of so mnay errors made on a constant basis

and the cowboys didnt have points docked, just a hefty fine

and another mistake in that game, the cowboys match winning try from brenton bowen should not have been a try, ty williams who picked the ball up was accidently offside and it should have been a penalty to the raiders which at the time were losing 22-24 and and they should have gotten a penalty which was near the posts and dobson would have kicked it and levelled up the scores

We could start by putting some onus on the officials. The interchange referee in the Cowboys 14th man case said he thought the other bloke had come off, and mistakenly took David Faiumu's interchange card. For this the Cowboys receive a $25,000 fine because the rules state that it remains the club's responsibility. To quote Grahame Annesley:

"Clubs must remain vigilant in ensuring the guidelines are strictly adhered to at all times."

Which makes me want to grow up to be an interchange referee. Get paid to go to the footy and if I'm too busy watching the game and **** up on my duties, its okay because there are rules which state its always someone else's fault.

Its the same for referees, touchies and video refs. They've got to pull off one hell of a comedy of errors to even prompt Finch to say "we'll be looking at some things during the week" let alone get dropped.

And I realise we need to protect our officials from massive back lash to entice more youngsters to pick up a whistle, but Jesus the coaches should be able to criticise the refs a bit more. No expletives or personal attacks, but a little more freedom than they currently have without facing a fine.

Basically, I believe if the officials of our game were a little less of a protected species, and held a bit more accountable for their screw ups like most people are in their work place, it'd go a long way to weeding out the incompetents and reinforcing praise on the officials who do their jobs well.

thats exactly what ive been saying mate. there does need to be accountability for refs, cos at the momemnt, they are heavily protected by the NRL, when they need to be improved when making errors

i remember the broncos did it a few years ago against the tigers, cant remember if the broncos lost points

They lost their points. Appealed and got them back.

Different circumstances though. In the Broncos case Shane Webcke was knocked out on behalf of foul play from the Tigers and was laying in Disney Land 50 odd meters off the play.

not in the shire anymore :(
they should get dropped for bad games, like players

scott is peachey's disciple!

If peachey and scott were co-CEO's of the NRL, there'd be no first grade players actually playing first grade, and no referees to ref the games.

Well, at least they're keen.

I'd like to think that there's a referee's review board - a mate of mine refs Rugby (Super 14 and a few internationals), and he's constantly telling me about the review panels, and their criticisms of his game. It sounds pretty helpful, knowing what the standard is, and what areas you need to be working on.

But from my limited experience of reffing touch footy, it's not as easy as it looks.

Perhaps if there is a review board, there should be a couple of coaches/ex-coaches, or maybe retired players. Maybe even injured players who are missing either a whole season, or just a part. Like Gasnier or Benji could be involved in reviewing referee's performances, about what's helpful for the players and stuff.

cant get far if there is no critisism...and all oh everything is going good where all inform... i always get told, u have to be critisised to improve...

for how much longer to we have to accept mediocrity

(i tipped the raiders)

Constructive criticism though Peach, bagging the sh!t out of people at will does no good.

I say get rid of the F'n 3rd ref! back in the good ol days refs had to be accurate and they called a fairer game than modern reffing ever could cause of the "safety net" of the 3rd ref and I for one am sick of the crap calls they make!

maybe they should have in goal linesmen who can see the grounding and everything and it would limit the use off the video ref

Since I missed it, when were the Cows caught for having too many players, was it during the game or post?
