Former Sharks player Mitch Healey has been appointed Cronulla Jersey Flegg coach for the 2007 season.

Healey played 223 first grade games for the Sharks in an 11-year career at the club before playing three years for Castleford in the UK Superleague. He was a nominated for the Sharks Leader Dream Team and is widely regarded as one of the best half-five eighths to have played in Cronulla colours in the history of the club.

Healey, who has previous coaching experience working as assistant to Souths NRL coaches Paul Langmack and Arthur Katinas in 2004, takes over reins of the under-20 Sharks from Aaron Raper. The young Sharks enjoyed considerable success under Raper, making the 2004 Grand Final and the preliminary final in 2005, before missing the finals and struggling somewhat during 2006.

"It will be good to come back to the Sharks after six years away. I'm very much looking forward to coaching the Flegg side and of being a part of the club again," Healey said.

Sharks CEO Greg Pierce, in announcing the appointment of Healey, was sure the club was getting an outstanding clubman who had the ability to develop the young talent.

"Mitch is a local product and club stalwart who gave great service, playing over 200 games at the Sharks," Pierce said. "He shares our passion for the club, will do a great job as Flegg coach, develop our young players and giving them every opportunity to progress to the highest level."

The Sharks are in the process of finalising their Flegg squad for 2007, with trials to take place on Saturday, September 26.

I do believe for our youngsters that this is a very good move and should pay off and thus giving our senior team more options for the future....I do think that we need 2 be paying more attention to the top grade rather than juniors tho:cool:
