Does anyone know whether the club would be allowed to transfer what we would have paid Mitch Brown this year to another of our players? eg Val or Bird

From my understanding the years salary would be just about payed up. I remember them saying it was %70 paid when the eels were trying to offload players so there wouldn't be too much to "transfer". I think the club was just doing him a good and letting him score a contract while it was there

The reason I asked is that maybe it's a sneaky way to add some $$ to a front ended contract for players we want to keep.

It's not particularly good business to let Difita and Mrown out of their contracts in a possible premiership year just to do them a favour.

%100. If there is some available funds, why not give some of the boys an advance? I'm sure if there was a few bucks to spare that's exactly what would of happened.

I was wondering about this exact same scenario the other day. If you were a player and they wanted to give you some of next years salary this year, what would you do?

Surprised it didn't happen a few years ago tbh. Brown is probably too good for the NSW Cup, but not good enough to be a full time first grader in the NRL. This is the blueprint for s Super League departure as per Blake Green back 7 years ago.

Gotta be happy for the guy. Local junior. Has been playing good footy in reggies by all reports. Good luck to him over there.

Re: the salary cap questions, I seriously doubt that what has been "paid" to Brown can be re-purposed, but it is highly likely that what was owed to him for the balance of the season can... Though I would t imagine this amounts to much. We are 80% of the way through the season so all that would be freed up would be 20% of his salary plus anything the team had allocated him for bonuses.

Even though Mitch Brown played OK for us a few weeks ago, I don't have a problem with him being released. As I have said before, IMHO, I don't believe he is the type of player that we want to take into a final, as he makes too many handling errors at crucial moments.

I am sure we have other players that are capable of filling in if required (Leutele, Gagan, or one of the former Ipswich boys). David Fifita is much more of a loss in my opinion, and could have been very handy to have, especially if we are up against a big pack like the Bulldogs.
