are things about to get worse next week with covell on report for tripping and douglas got noddy with a nasty one across the chops in the first half dose anyone think either of them has a case to answer because covell is our goal kicker an at the moment we need all the points we can get and douglas has been our standout player in the first 4 rounds.........

the covell incident wasnt much. he tried to use his hands to tackle pattern as well so it would be rediculous if he was suspended. but that would be a good excuse to try a new guy if he did get time

Covell

Gordon Tallis had a god comment just after the Covell potential trip. He said that it couldn't be a trip as he had seen Alan langer do it 3,000 times and never got penalised.

CRONULLA'S Luke Covell is likely to be spared the prospect of becoming the first player charged with tripping for almost four years. However, his wing partner, Misi Taulapapa, could become the latest victim of the NRL's crackdown on players leading with their feet.

Covell was placed on report for a trip on Luke Patten in the 77th minute of yesterday's clash with the Bulldogs, but the fullback said afterwards the act was not deliberate - and that is likely to prevent the winger from being charged. To be charged, the NRL match-review committee must be convinced the act was intentional.

That defence won't prevent Taulapapa from being charged, after he appeared to lead with his feet in a controversial moment of the game - when Bulldogs five-eighth Ben Roberts lost possession of the ball, which led to Bryson Goodwin being denied a try.

The match-review committee has come down hard on players leading with their feet to prevent tries following controversial incidents in last year's grand final involving Melbourne fullback Billy Slater. Souths winger Nathan Merritt was suspended for one match for the offence as Parramatta's Joel Reddy scored in round two.

Tripping, conversely, has been much rarer - the last player to be charged was St George Illawarra lock Shaun Timmins, who was banned for one match in 2005.

Patten even said he would do the same as Covell if the circumstances were reversed. "It's a reflex action," he said. "He had to try and stop me. I'm sure there was nothing in it. I've got a bit of a cork, but I'd probably do the same sort of thing."

The match-review committee is expected to continue its crusade against the grapple tackle, with Frank-Paul Nuuausala's challenge on Eels second-rower Nathan Hindmarsh one of several incidents to be studied by the panel.

Meanwhile, Gold Coast livewire Preston Campbell faces up to six weeks out after tearing a calf against Melbourne on Saturday night.

Penrith lock Luke Lewis is likely to be available despite a cut above his eye and a bruised sternum.

and the nrl change the rules to suit langer, and said that you can use your legs as long as you have hands on the player.

Bad to worse ... The Sharks are set to be without skipper Paul Gallen, Misi Taulapapa and Kade Snowden for this weekend's match against the Raiders (Getty Images: Ezra Shaw)

Struggling Cronulla could lose up to three players, including captain Paul Gallen, for Saturday night's round five NRL clash against the Raiders.

Gallen, winger Misi Taulapapa and prop Kade Snowden were all hit with charges by the NRL judiciary over conduct from Sunday's 24-12 loss to the Bulldogs, the club's third-straight defeat.

Gallen's charge was the most serious, the skipper hit with a grade two striking charge that carries a two-week ban with an early guilty plea.

The representative forward risks a three-match suspension if he heads to the judiciary to fight the charge.

Taulapapa, who had just finished serving a one-game suspension for a head slam, is set to be rubbed out for another match for making dangerous contact with his feet.

Snowden is also facing a one-match suspension after being served a grade one dangerous contact charge for a grapple tackle.

The Tigers' Rhys Hanbury, Melbourne number seven Cooper Cronk and Titans back Brett Delaney will escape suspension with an early plea for the same offence.

Another Sharks player, Luke Douglas, was charged for a careless high tackle, but will not miss any action.

Cronulla Shark Paul Gallen

Cronulla's horror start to the NRL season has continued with four Sharks, including captain Paul Gallen, charged by the match review committee following Sunday's loss to the Bulldogs.

In a performance labelled "embarrassing" and "legless" by coach Ricky Stuart, Gallen has the most serious charge, grade two striking, and could miss three matches.

The skipper will miss two matches with an early guilty plea and a third if he unsuccessfully contests the charge at the NRL judiciary.

Gallen allegedly used a forearm on Bulldogs half Ben Roberts in an off-the-ball incident in the 18th minute of Sunday's 24-12 loss at ANZ Stadium.

Winger Misi Taulapapa could miss two games after being charged with dangerous contact with the legs or feet, but can escape with a one-match ban with the early plea.

Prop Kade Snowden is one of four players across the NRL charged with grapple tackles as the league's crackdown continues.

He will miss one game regardless of whether he enters the early plea or not.

The Sharks' other prop, Luke Douglas, has been charged with a grade one careless high tackle but will not need to sit out any matches.

The charges could leave the Sharks decimated for Saturday's clash with Canberra, with Trent Barrett (neck) in doubt and Ben Ross (neck) and Brett Kearney (ankle) already ruled out for the season.

Cronulla have also endured a two-match ban for half Brett Seymour for an off-field indiscretion, although he returned on Sunday.

The Sharks, who are 14th after just one win, received one piece of good news with winger Luke Covell escaping a charge for a trip.

The Wests Tigers' Rhys Hanbury, Melbourne's Cooper Cronk and Gold Coast's Brett Delaney were the other players charged with grapples.

All three can escape a ban with the early guilty plea but would miss one game if they were unsuccessful at the judiciary.

Struggling Cronulla's hopes of staging a revival have been dealt a massive blow, with four players charged by the NRL judiciary.

Inspirational skipper Paul Gallen heads the hit list, booked for a grade two striking charge and facing up to three weeks on the sideline.

Team-mates Luke Douglas (careless high tackle), Misi Taulapapa (dangerous contact – legs/feet) and Kade Snowden (danger contact – head/neck) were also charged.

Douglas will escape a ban if he accepts an early guilty plea while Taulapapa and Snowden are looking at least one match.

The news could have been even worse for the Sharks, with winger Luke Covell fortunate not to be facing a tripping charge after being reported in Sunday's loss to the Bulldogs.

Cronulla has lost three straight games and is battling a heavy injury toll.

Three others players were charged with dangerous contact (head/neck) – Wests Tigers' Rhys Hanbury, Storm half-back Cooper Cronk and the Titans' Brett Delaney.

All three can avoid suspension with early guilty pleas.

Meanwhile, Wests Tigers full-back Tim Moltzen has been ruled out for four weeks with a dislocated right elbow.

Moltzen underwent scans on Monday which revealed a dislocated radio-ulnar joint and will begin rehabilitation immediately.

Moltzen suffered the injury in the opening minute against Penrith on Saturday night and now joins Peni Tagive (groin) and Blake Lazarus (knee) on the Wests Tigers injury list.

CRONULLA's woes have deepened with four players, including captain Paul Gallen, charged by the NRL's match review committee.

Gallen, winger Misi Taliapapa and prop Kade Snowden all face suspension after being charged, while prop Luke Douglas was also charged over a careless high tackle in yesterday's 24-12 loss to the Bulldogs but will escape a ban.

Gallen is looking at two or three matches for grade two striking over a 15th minute incident involving Bulldogs five-eighth Ben Roberts, while Taliapapa will miss one match if he pleads guilty to leading with feet and Snowden is also facing a one match ban for a grapple tackle.
