The top bit of this RLW article summed up the behaviour of Manly in the 1996 Preliminary Final, where they shut out Cronulla 24-0:
"If it hadn't been for the sledging and the contemptuous treatment of David Peachey last Sunday, I reckon fans would have accepted Manly's forthcoming victory in the 1996 Optus Cup generously enough... But with the exception of their own loyal band, it will be the most unpopular victory in a long time."
Cronulla football manager Shane Richardson was certainly on the mark with his comments: "I know one thing. David Peachey will be remembered as a better player than John Hopoate in years to come."
