I just read this article and wondered what the thoughts of locals are in response to this. I used to live in the shire (Woolaware Rd), and I have a soft spot for the area (my dad still lives there). But this kind of stuff paints Cronulla as the racist capital of Australia. Not how I remember it.

"Former Reclaim Australia spokesman Shermon Burgess has called for a rally to be held at Cronulla in three months’ time.

His Cronulla call follows recent Reclaim Australia rallies in Melbourne and Sydney.

According to its Facebook page, the Reclaim Australia group has been formed to ‘‘stop halal tax, sharia law and islamisation’’.

About 150 people gathered in Martin Place at the Reclaim Australia rally on July 19 and several were arrested.

Similar rallies and counter rallies have been held in other capital cities.

Mr Burgess is reported to have parted company with Reclaim Australia and has his own website under the United Patriots Front name.

Speaking as the Great Aussie Patriot, he used the site to announce on Saturday, July 25, that he would be seeking a permit to hold a rally at Cronulla in three months’ time.

‘‘We are going to return to where its all started, the very motherland of anti-Islam,’’ he said.

‘‘We will be rallying at Cronulla three months from now.’’

He said it ''was not a protest where people will go wild in the street and cause trouble.''

In another post on Sunday, July 26, he said he chose Cronulla to see if there was still a democracy in the nation.

‘‘Do we still have a right to protest against against radical Islam and anti-Australian racism anywhere in the nation?’’ he said.

‘‘This was the reason we chose Cronulla.

‘‘We are going to be peaceful and going to stand together and just simply voice our concerns.

‘‘If we get denied for a permit for Cronulla, it will show that democracy in this nation truly is dead and we do not have a right to protest where we wish.

‘‘So it will be interesting to see whether or not this does get approved.’’

Mr Burgess said it would be an alcohol-free event, family friendly and people were welcome ‘‘regardless of skin colour.’’

‘‘If you are a proud Australia you can be black, yellow, brown or white,’’ he said.

As of late Monday, July 27, the Leader was unable to confirm with police whether United Patriots Front or Reclaim Australia had applied for a permit to hold a rally at Cronulla."

Really would love to see this happen and then the locals just turn up in opposition.

Cronulla is the motherland of anti-Islam according to the head of The United Patriots Front. lol. Ok.

He sounds like he is off his rocker. Let them march and ignore them. Maybe the mothership will land at the motherland and take him away.

I haven't lived in the area for a long time now. Rightly or wrongly though, plenty of people from outside the area perceive it as very white and somewhat racist, probably because of the riot there years ago. As I said, not saying that's right.

It's such a shame that people choose to be narrow minded about the reasons the riot took place. People had enough of others coming in and behaving in a arrogant and uncivilised manner. Those who have an agenda about the Shire choose to ignore this fact.

The perception you allude to HB is definitely real but I very strongly believe it is an incorrect perception.

I don't live in the Shire of ever have but I've got cousins, uncles and general family there (hence the Sharks link). I am certainly aware of the perception and they have their fair share as far as I can see.

The side of my family down that way are relaxed and easy going and I'm proud to call them family.

If this does go ahead, I will be there to let these morons know that I absolutely DO NOT share their views and I would urge all other Shire residents to do likewise.

Of course, this should be done in a completely peaceful and law abiding manner but it is important that these rednecks are not allowed to be seen as representative of the Sutherland Shire.
