Lance Thompson heads home to Dragons

IT WAS one of rugby league's most harrowing break-ups - the fiercely proud Dragons junior shunned from the big Red V and into the bosom of bitter rival Cronulla.

But four painful years after being shown the door at St George Illawarra, Lance Thompson is preparing to return to his spiritual lair next season.

We can reveal that Dragons officials this week finalised negotiations for Thompson to become SGBall coach in 2010, and are contemplating a promotion to Toyota Cup duties the following year.

The appointment comes as a major surprise, given the venom surrounding Thompson's departure mid-contract at the end of 2005. The split generated such angst down Kogarah way that local sporting identity Dick Caine even hired two scantily clad models to promote a campaign to sack Dragons CEO Peter Doust.

But contrary to popular opinion, Doust was not the main man behind Thompson's demise. That role fell to former coach Nathan Brown and assistant Paul McGregor, who wanted the forward out of the club. With Brown and McGregor gone, the path is clear for a prodigal son to return.

The only stumbling block for Thompson will be sacrificing his player management agency, which represents the likes of Chase Stanley, David Milne and Atelea Vea. NRL rules prevent anyone with official links to a club from being a player manager.

FORMER Dragons hardman Lance Thompson is eyeing a shock comeback in the Illawarra Carlton League. Still only 32, the redhead said he's considering lacing up the boots for Helensburgh Tigers. "I have told Stuart Webb [former Dragon now playing for Helensburgh] that I might have a run," Thompson said.

"I have been getting into the weights and doing some training, so I thought I might as well have a crack."

Thompson has been on the lookout for alternatives after abandoning his restaurant venture at Kyle Bay Bowling club. A chronic knee injury prematurely ended his career at Cronulla two years ago.

"One knee is still a bit dodgy but it will be right," Thompson said.

"Hopefully it is just like riding a bike."

Thompson's program a push in right direction

Thompson's program a push in right direction

WELCOME to Lance Thompson's football factory - a personalised training service run by the former Dragons and Sharks star for aspiring NRL players.

Each week night at Carrs Park, small groups of ambitious teenagers from St George, Illawarra, Cronulla and Sydney Roosters work under the watchful eye of Thompson in a bid to enhance their prospects of making it to the Toyota Cup and eventually the NRL. Training three nights a week over a 12-week period, the players undergo a virtual NRL off-season program aimed at increasing their speed and power.

''This type of training only really exists in the NRL,'' Thompson said. ''I've spent 15 off-seasons in the NRL and I wanted to show these kids what we're doing and how to build up strength and how to build up power to give them the best opportunity at a rugby league career.''

The results speak for themselves, with Jack Noble - a 16-year-old lock who played under Thompson in St George's SG Ball team this season - having put on 7kg and added 45kg to his bench press. ''He is now an 85kg [player] benching a 130kg so it just astronomical how much these guys are improving in a 12-week program,'' Thompson said.

Noble's mother, Michelle, said: ''It's unbelievable the difference it has made. It has just given him so much confidence and you can see that he is really enjoying his football.'' Noble is one of four Thirroul Butchers who have just completed a training program with Thompson. ''Every one of them is the same,'' he said. ''They're all a lot stronger and faster.''

Kane Evans, who will play for the Roosters Toyota Cup side next season, said it was the hardest training he has done but the benefits were worth it. ''When I tackle people I can throw them to the ground harder and with all of the leg work we have done I have found that I am faster, I can step quicker,'' he said.

With word spreading of the training, Thompson said he was now struggling to keep up with the demand. ''I've got 17 at the moment and many more are waiting to get a start,'' he said.

FORMER Dragons firebrand Lance Thompson is poised to make a comeback to rugby league. We have been told the hardworking second-rower, whose career was cut short by a knee injury, will dust off the boots this year and play A-Grade in the Cronulla competition.

Thompson is busy assembling a side that could include former Dragon and Tiger Matt Head.

I was wondering why Lance Thompson was covered in black white and blue last night, I know he finished his career with us, but he was a dragon for nearly ten yrs before that wasnt he? Wouldnt you think he would just follow the team he played most his footy with?

He had a bit of a stink with them when he left- I'm not sure if it was resolved. Great to see him at the game and supporting the right team though.

yeah but who at the dragons now did he play with?

Hornby, Gasnier, Cooper and Young?

Wait, wait, wait. Thommo was one of the one's in the sheds with the boys!

Check out Sharks TV- the "In The Sheds" segment.

I'm pretty sure Lance enjoyed his time at the Sharks. He left the queens on a sour note, but I think he bonded with our boys pretty well.
