More than likely he wouldn’t have played this well if he’d stayed. A change in club can be good for an average first grader.

I agree Hench players get comfortable that's the problem if he had stayed on who is to say that he would have made a difference you cant take that chance he wasn't playing as well as he has this year can he keep it up for next year that's the question?

I doubt it.

Don't know what most of you are smoking. Kingston was really really solid for us when he played. I'm scathing we let him go, even from the moment it happened. He's unlucky not to be starting for Parra, he's head and shoulders above Keating.

Parramatta grand finalist to sign with the Panthers

KEVIN Kingston will sign a one-year contract with the Penrith Panthers this week.

Kingston yesterday confirmed all chance of remaining at Parramatta had gone.

``It's imminent and it's nice to be wanted, Penrith are a very strong club,'' said the Cronulla reject who became a key member of Parramatta's romantic run to the NRL grand final this season.

``Parramatta tried every avenue to keep me and I was blown away by the support I received,'' he said of other Eels' offers to drop payments so Parramatta could fit him under the salary cap.

``But Ian Schubert said no,'' he said of the NRL's auditing officer and his assessing of Kingston as a $110,000-a-season man.

Kingston said he wouldn't be receiving that but a base $50,000 contract at Penrith because of their own salary-cap problems.

The father of a one-year-old son, 26-year-old Kingston said although his nominal value might now be high it wouldn't be reflected in his wallet, and his wife would still have to work.

Still, Kingston said he couldn't be disappointed with how things have panned out.

``I couldn't have imagined this season in my wildest dreams,'' he said.

``It was pretty special and it was a privilege to be part of such a great team.''

Penrith coach Matthew Elliott said Kingston's arrival would be ``a massive positive''.

``He buzzed them up a bit when he came on in the second half and he has that grand-final experienc now,'' he said of Kinsgton's Parramatta form.

Elliott said Kingston's departure from a club he wanted to stay at was nothing new under the salary cap.

``That's the nature of the modern terrain,'' he said. ``We can't throw a wedge of money at him.''

Penrith have lost hooker Paul Aiton to Cronulla but Elliott said he hadn't given any thought yet to Kingston as starting hooker or bench impact player, as he was with Parramatta.

Elliott said he had much faith in 20-year-old hooker Masada Iosefa.

The Kingston case has led to Rugby League Players Association chief executive David Garnsey labelling the salary cap's application as ``unfair''.

Panthers sign Kingston from Eels

The Panthers have signed Parramatta's grand final hooker Kevin Kingston after he was forced out of the club by the salary cap.

Kingston was hopeful of staying with the Eels, with the hooker even offering to hand back his match payments in order to remain at the club.

But Panthers boss Michael Leary said they were eager to poach the 26-year-old to fill the void left by rake Paul Aiton's departure to the Sharks.

"Kevin is an ideal player for our team having gained a lot of experience in making it to this year's grand final," he said.

Kingston put pen to paper on Tuesday to the one-year contract.

Following him out west is Canberra winger Adrian Purtell who also signed with the Panthers on Tuesday to a two-year deal.

Although Purtell's career has been disrupted by injury and poor form, Leary said he was confident the 24-year-old would add depth to the side.

Penrith have been on a signing spree of late, after already obtaining the services of controversial Tigers prop Daine Laurie and Canberra second-rower Nigel Plum.

Kingston extends deal with Panthers

Kingston extends deal with Panthers
16:10 AEST Apr 1 2010

Penrith hooker Kevin Kingston has finally found a long-term home, extending his deal at the NRL club until the end of 2013.

A member of Parramatta's grand final side last year, Kingston was squeezed out of the Eels by the salary cap despite offering to pay back some of his wages in order to stay at the club.

The 26-year-old, who also played for Cronulla from 2005-08, was thrown a lifeline by the Panthers and his outstanding form has earned him the long-term deal.

Kingston joined fellow new recruit Travis Burns in signing on for a further three seasons.

Burns joined Penrith from North Queensland this season.

"Our strategy has been to lock in those key positions long term," Panthers CEO Michael Leary said.

"We were able to secure (halfback) Luke Walsh for the same term recently and Lachlan Coote re-signed with the club last year until 2012 so we are in a very good position with these players.

"Keeping those players together will enable us consistency as we continue to sign players."

The Panthers will now turn their attention to securing representative pair Michael Jennings and Frank Pritchard.

Captain Petero Civoniceva's future beyond 2010 also remains up in the air after he indicated a return home to Brisbane was a possibility.

Kingston signs with Penrith so Nerang must wait - Gold Coast Bulletin News

Kingston signs with Penrith so Nerang must wait
Patrick Molihan
April 3rd, 2010

His parents would rather he play for Nerang but Kevin Kingston is stoked to have a three-year contract with Penrith

KEVIN Kingston is stoked to have sorted out his long-term future but he's not going to crow about it because he knows Penrith is probably only the `second best' option for his folks.

The hooker has extended his deal by three years until the end of 2013 which is `incredible' for a player normally forced to operate on season-by-season contracts.

While it's great for Kev, wife Melissa and 18-month-old Billy's future he knows Penrith probably wasn't first choice for his mum Lynne and father Ross.

"I think they are pretty happy," said Kevin of his Gold Coast-based family.

"But I think in the back of their minds they always want me to come home and play for the Nerang Roosters. I think this is second best."

As for wife Melissa: "She's rapt. She is biased though and thinks I'm getting my just desserts."

Penrith are pretty rapt too with their new buy.

Kingston was dynamic during Parramatta's charge towards the grand final last year but while he proved a winner off the bench the salary cap didn't allow the Eels to return the love.

The 26-year-old, who'd played 59 games for the Sharks after moving down to Sydney, thought it best not to plan too far ahead but now that's all changed after the Panthers locked him away.

"I'm just that happy to be here for the next three years," he said.

"It's great to be settled and one less thing to worry about.

"All I've been thinking about is that's another 75 games in the NRL I can have.

"Hopefully it doesn't affect me because (with an uncertain future) last year I played like every game was my last."

Things are different too at the Panthers. When Kevin played for the Eels he shared the job with Matt Keating but now he's definitely the man for the Panthers and feels like he's found a home.

"I have the greatest opportunity to play a lot of minutes," he said.

"Roles are reversed and I'm the team's starting hooker now and a bit more important to the team.

"I like how Matt (Elliott) is chilled out and backs me to make my own decisions. He leaves a lot of it up to me and I'm not having to follow strict instructions."

Kingston will be out to celebrate his new deal with a victory against the Knights on Monday.

It's a game the Panthers certainly expect to win but Kingston admits playing the Knights in Newcastle is a big ask.

"They get fired up in front of a home crowd and we just have to weather the storm," he said.

And so too will the Nerang Roosters without their homegrown star for another four seasons at least.

The best and worst NRL recruits of 2010

<EDITED>

1. Kevin Kingston (Penrith): The main man behind Penrith’s charge to their first finals run since 2004 is former Eel and Shark Kevin Kingston. Kingston has given Penrith spark and run out of dummy-half which has laid the platform for the top attack in 2010. He may have lost his powers since shaving his beard off, however, with the Panthers 0-2 since Kingston got the razor out including blowing a 22-0 lead over former club Parramatta on Saturday night.

Kingston is a bum.

He would of come in handy in 09 instead Hughes and Seu Seu.

He'd be playing NSW Cup if we had him in our squad this year.
