Tavinor gets another chance

JONATHAN Tavinor wants to make the most of his second chance in the National Rugby League after securing a contract with the Sharks.

Halfback for Erina in the Jim Beam Cup, Tavinor, 21, has taken up a one-year deal to join the Cronulla club.

New Zealand-born Tavinor moved to Australia to take up a deal with Parramatta in 2005 but felt he didn’t make the most of his opportunity.

“I played two years of Jersey Flegg but didn’t do as well as I would have liked,” he said.

He moved to the Erina Eagles in 2007 and rediscovered his form.

“I got my confidence back and started enjoying my football again,” Tavinor said.

His manager Mick Newton, of Central Coast-based Galaxy Sports Management, said Tavinor had earned a great opportunity with his top form.

“He’s proved himself and has made the right people take notice,” Newton said.

Tavinor makes short work of early training

Tavinor makes short work of early training

JONATHAN Tavinor’s new Erina footy shorts have already had a good workout and he hasn’t even played a game yet.

Tavinor, 23, learned to surf during a season with the Cronulla Sharks last year.

His short love affair with the waves has continued since his return to the Central Coast.

But unlike your standard surfer, Tavinor wears his footy shorts.

“Boardies are too uncomfortable,” Tavinor laughed.

The halfback is shaping as a key buy for the Eagles for the next two seasons.

And it’s a happy homecoming for Tavinor, who played for Erina in 2007-08.

“I was down in Sydney for a year but the opportunities just didn’t come my way,” Tavinor said.

“I learned a lot, especially training full-time in the pre-season, but didn’t get a chance to put it into practice.”

After a stop-start season in NSW Cup for the Sharks last year, Tavinor is simply looking forward to getting on the field.

“I just want to get out on the paddock and play some consistent football,” he said.

Tavinor is also keen to link up again with several players he used to coach in the under-17s, who have progressed through to first grade.

But at the moment he’s focusing on his own preparation for a return to the Central Coast competition.

“It’s pretty tough and very physical,” he said.

“I’ve just got to get myself in the best possible condition and be confident in my preparation.”

New signings a big boost for coach
Aaron Kelly
2nd October 2010

THE Central Comets will mean business once again in 2011 – if some of their new signings are anything to go by.

Comets coach Wayne Barnett has announced a host of newcomers to the club for next year’s Intrust Super Cup, including a couple of big boppers.

Impressive New Zealand product Daniel Palavi, who will play for the Warriors in tomorrow’s Toyota Cup under-20s grand final against South Sydney, will bolster the Comets’ forward ranks.

Fellow up-and-coming forward recruits John Clayton (Balmain) and Ben Faulkner (Broncos) will also add some valuable size to Barnett’s roster.

The Comets this week also signed talented halfback Jonathan Tavinor from NSW club Erina.

“He’s a player I’ve been looking at for a couple of years now and he’s finally decided to come up (to CQ),” Barnett said of the former Cronulla lower grader and NZ Maoris representative.

Former NRL player Luke Dyer will also call Rockhampton home in 2011 after signing from English Super League club Celtic Crusaders, while a former crowd favourite could also be back in a Comets jersey next season.

Barnett confirmed playmaker Nat Bowman was close to making a decision on a return to Browne Park in 2011.

The 2008 Queensland Cup best and fairest player, who won a premiership with Townsville Brothers this year, was a key member of the Comets’ 2009 finals assault.

Bowman dominated this year’s Townsville competition, earning North Queensland and ultimately Queensland Rangers selection.

“I spoke to Nat again this week and he’s getting back to us in the next week,” Barnett said.

The Comets launch their 2011 campaign when the squad begins pre-season training on November 7.

Comets unveil 2011 squad

Comets unveil 2011 squad
Alan Kennedy
5th November 2010

WE ARE yet to feel the heat of the summer on our backs and CQ Comets coach Wayne Barnett is already unveiling his 2011 squad.

<EDITED>

ARRIVING this morning is another piece of the Comets puzzle with John Clayton, another powerhouse front-rower, ready for training.

While Welsh international Ian Webster is due back in December and Luke Dyer is resting in Sydney until the end of this month, Barnett is expecting more additions to his squad over the next few weeks.

Half back Johnathan Tavinor is set to partner Webster in the halves and he comes into the squad having played at Cronulla.
