Looks to be the logical successor to long-serving half Fred Dennehy.
Last season he played a number of first grade games and handled the scrum-working role very well. Although he is small, Purcell lacks nothing in determination and is very fast around the scrum base.
Like most players of his age he still has a lot to learn, particularly the intricacies of halfback play which can only come through experience.
There's little doubt that he will have a tough time beating Dennehy for the top job this season, but he has time on his side.
Another feature of his play is his willingness to tackle up-front when needed, but he also has the speed to get across in cover-defence.
