Dumped Panthers coach Lang disappointed
February 20, 2006 - 7:05PM

Penrith coach John Lang says he is disappointed the Panthers broke a "pact" in signing a new coach behind his back but vows the move won't destabilise the NRL club's premiership campaign.

Canberra coach Matthew Elliott signed a three-year deal with Penrith late last week after accepting a last-minute approach from Panthers CEO Glenn Matthews.

Matthews had promised to consult Lang, who is off contract after this season, before approaching rival coaches, but went back on his word by signing Elliott after Newcastle's interest in him had cooled.

Lang said he would have no problem working alongside Matthews this season but admitted he was "disappointed" by the betrayal.

"I've had an extremely good relationship with Glenn, I've held him in very high regard and that's why I was so disappointed he didn't keep up our little pact," Lang said.

"We'll get on fine. I'm disappointed in him, I told him that, but that's life. Nobody's perfect.

"In the end it's his decision and that's the bottom line. I'm not going to ask him why he thought that or whatever, it's irrelevant.

"He's the CEO and that's his role.

"I've got no dramas. I get paid very well to do this job and if they decide they want to pay somebody else, that's their call."

Matthews, who paid tribute to the tremendous work done by Lang at the Panthers, said his only regret was conducting the negotiations behind his back.

"I certainly promised John I would talk to him first, but things just happened so quickly," he said.

Lang, who took the Panthers to their second premiership in 2003, refused to concede his career was over but ruled out applying for the vacant Newcastle or Canberra roles for next year.

"I'll just see what happens from there, I won't be seeking jobs," Lang said.

"I've been in this game for 13 years and I'm sure if anyone is interested they can get a hold of my number.

"If somebody is interested you talk to them, that's why I came down (from the Sharks) and spoke to Roger (Cowan) about this job.

"I've got to like them, they've got to like me and if they do you can come to an agreement and away you go.

"People make it complicated, I think it's really simple."

"I like to give fate a bit of a nudge when I can," he added.

Asked if he still had more to offer as a coach, he replied: "I'd like to think so.

"You should get better every year if you don't lose your drive and before senility sets in.

"I'll coach while somebody will give me a job and while I still have the drive and enjoyment of it."

While some of his players were "a bit stunned" when he broke the news to them on Sunday in Alice Springs, Lang said he wasn't surprised by the decision.

"Nup, I wasn't shocked," he said.

"Where there's smoke there's fire. I've had a few blokes ringing me up and asking me about my job and I hadn't heard anything from the club, so I wasn't shocked.

"I'm just going to do the best job I can here and I think we can have a very good season."

The veteran mentor said he had no hard feelings towards Elliott.

"I hope Matt retains his job to keep him out of my hair a bit longer," he joked.

"I have absolutely no ill feelings toward Matthew Elliott, he's a career coach.

"He's been offered a job and he's accepted it, I've got no dramas at all."

Raiders may add Lang to shortlist
By Greg Prichard
March 31, 2006

THE Canberra management will consult the club's board at the weekend before deciding whether to consider John Lang for the coaching job next year.

Raiders officials are giving little away on coaching other than to say they are yet to make a decision on who will replace Matthew Elliott at the end of the season. Elliott will take over at Penrith next season.

But sources have told the Herald that Penrith coach Lang's name will be discussed. It is understood an intermediary has made an approach to Canberra on behalf of Lang, who has a strong coaching record over more than a decade with Cronulla then the Panthers.

Similarly, it is also understood an intermediary has made an approach on behalf of Wests Tigers assistant coach and former Penrith coach Royce Simmons.

Lang has so far not been in the running for the Raiders job, but that is not to say he won't be now.

Two-time premiership-winning coach and former Australian coach Chris Anderson, St Helens coach and former New Zealand Warriors and Kiwi Test coach Daniel Anderson and North Queensland assistant coach Neil Henry are the main contenders at this stage. It remains to be seen whether Simmons, who Tigers coach Tim Sheens credits for a lot of the work that helped make the team premiers last year, is being seriously considered.

North Queensland chief executive Peter Parr, who has worked as an official not only with Cowboys coach Graham Murray but others including Wayne Bennett and Craig Bellamy, when Bellamy was still on the staff at Brisbane, afforded Henry enormous praise yesterday.

"Neil is as good a coach as I've seen when it comes to the technical aspects of the game," Parr said. "He is a great communicator as well. We would hate to lose him, but if he was offered a job like the one at Canberra we would congratulate him and wish him well for the future, because he deserves the chance.

"He reminds me very much of Craig Bellamy and we saw Craig quickly prove himself at Melbourne when he got the chance to coach first grade."

Meanwhile, St George Illawarra have given coach Nathan Brown a new deal that will take him through until the end of the 2008 season. Brown was contracted until the end of this year. The club's board made the decision at a meeting on Tuesday and announced it yesterday. Brown's future at the club was never in doubt, but there had been speculation about whether he would get a one-, two- or three-year deal.

"I am very pleased to continue my involvement with the Dragons," Brown said yesterday. "I have always had great passion and enthusiasm for this club, ever since I arrived here as a player in 1992. Everybody knows I want to be a career rugby league coach."

The Dragons broke through for their first win of the season last weekend, when they beat South Sydney 44-14, but will face a much harder task when they meet Brisbane at WIN Stadium on Sunday.

John Lang would be a good acquistion for coach 2008!

He took Panthers to a title something Raper won't do.

Yeh, good call Geat White, if they were to sign him now for 2008, Raper might get the shits and leave, then we would have John Lang as coach next year. However its highly unlikely, I think the management holds Raper in high regard. Anyone know any different ?

It is the whol family thing, Pierces, Rapers, etc.

Plus their involvement a certain junior rugby league club.

I would rather see Lam do the job, if he won't or can't why not look at Lang again?

I'm with you there Sean in that I've got no problem with what Stuart Raper's been doing. It's disappointing to see the lynch mob out again on the back of a few losses.

Anderson was a great coach, yes the style of footy was different and boring but at least he had a paln for the junior developement that lastest 5 yrs.

Tell me, does Raper have that outlook?

I couldn't care less if we won 10 straight I would still say Raper should go, he won't make the tough decisions of axing people. Kimmorley is a good player and so is Dykes, but the simple fact is they do not play well together, and that is one example.

Hutch and Scott have both played a month in the top grade longer then they should have been Another example.

I know the Gumster will back me up here??????????

Raper should give a couple of juniors a go instead of sticking with scott. They will be better for it down the track.
Sharks must win tonight against knights should be a close game.

I think John Lang had his chance, he was there for a long while and got close a few times but not close enough. If raper dont bring home a title by the end of his contract, get rid of him than and go for a new coach, a decent coach.

Usually coaches don't finish there contract, its hard to find one that left on there own terms . They either are doing well and don't want to leave or the club is doing poorley and there sacked or not there contract is simply not renewed.I personally don't think his up to the grade ,give him to the end see how he stacks up .And yes i would like to see lang back he brings out the best in young players and does make the hard decisions plus he has one the comp.

I agree 110% with you great White, too much of a link between Pierces/Rapers and a juniour rugby league club across the road. Raper has a winning percentage of 50, 3rd worse in the league, that means he wins 1 out of every 2 games, over 3 years that's not great, and he's had some decent teams too. i don't see Raper making any hard decisions really. If he continues to persist with poor performances what does that say, if i was playing for them and Scott was being continually picked in the team i'd be pretty pissed off, everyone in the team know's hes rubbish. Dykes and Noddy don't work well, it's a fact and they didn't last year either so give up on it Raper, Dykes at hooker from the bench i say, at least Noddy's played for Aust. and won a GF

Penrith fullback Rhys Wesser says the players owe departing coach John Lang a fitting send-off in his final year at the NRL club.

The Panthers' 2003 premiership-winning coach is leaving at the end of the season to make way for the incoming Matthew Elliott, the current Canberra mentor.

"We haven't spoken about it much, but in the back of our minds we know that Lang's a good coach and a good friend and we like to put all our effort in and see him off on a good note," said Wesser, who scored three tries in the Panthers' record 36-6 win over the New Zealand Warriors at CUA Stadium.

"We owe it to each other, we owe it to the coaching staff and to ourselves to do the best over the next five weeks.

"And if we're there (in the finals) come September that would be great."

Saturday's win, the club's biggest ever against the Warriors, lifted the Panthers to 22 premiership points, the same as eighth-placed Cronulla.

They trail both the Sharks and Parramatta (9th) on points differential, while sitting one place above Canberra (11th), also on 22 points.

The Panthers play bottom sides South Sydney and Sydney Roosters in the next two weeks before games against Cronulla and Newcastle - two teams at the foot of the eight - and the second-placed Bulldogs in the final round.

"Every single game from here on in is going to be tough, regardless of whether the team are on the bottom of the table," said Panthers skipper Tony Puletua.

"We have a lot to play for, for the guys and our staff that are leaving this year, and we just want to go out and do our best the last few weeks."

Of Lang's departure, Panthers prop Joel Clinton said: "It's something we've kept pretty quiet, Langy talks about it a little bit.

"It's one of those things that happens in rugby league.

"You've just got to make do with what you've got and hopefully we can just go out and give it a good crack."

Bring Back Lang?

Livid Cronulla supporters were calling on the club to bring back outgoing Penrith coach, John Lang last night after the Eels snatched their eighth straight win off the back of 34-14 victory over the Sharks at Toyota Park.

Lang - who won a premiership with Penrith in 2003 two seasons after leaving the Sharks - took the Sharks to the finals six times in 8 eight seasons.

Prior to Lang's arrival on Captain Cook Drive, the Sharks reached the finals only six times. Lang - who is being replaced by Mathew Elliot at Penrith next year - has yet to be picked up by a new club.

Sharks fans had seen enough and headed home to log onto their preferred forum of choice to dispatch the boots'n all artillery of a frustrated mob.

A forum poster named Hammerhead on SharksForever.com, suggested the Sharks "appoint him (Lang) as coaching co-ordinator to oversee all three grades and get the proper recruitment and playing structures in place."

Others were not so kind. "I'm speechless. I was going to stay up and watch it, but they can get stuffed, I'll watch Denis the menace with my kids. I just can't believe it," wrote Gummyshark.

Cronulla fans will get their own way if only temporarily next weekend when John Lang returns to Shark Park. The only difference is that he'll be plotting the downfall of his former side when they tackle the Panthers.

Will Langy come back is the major question? My guess is that if RAPER stays on our next coach will be ET if we have yet to win a premiership.
