Yeah when hype is generated by fans and not press as was the case with Romelo, you know it's justified.

Sad to have let him go but that's in the past now.

It is a shame Joel Romelo had such an attitude problem whilst with us, in the games for the Panthers NYC side I have seen, he has been great. Hopefully for his sake, he has snapped out of it and letting his footy do the talking, shame he couldn't do it whilst with us.

Penrith's Trent Waterhouse and Joel Romelo in training-ground punch-up

IT seems Matt Elliott is not the only one feeling the heat out Penrith way as the new season approaches.

Senior forward Trent Waterhouse and young buck Joel Romelo shocked team mates recently by trading punches at training.

The fight was so spirited it forced Elliott to halt an opposed session that was taking place when tensions erupted.

One onlooker said Waterhouse resented a "heavy" tackle from Romelo, a member of Penrith's Under 20s squad yet to taste first grade.

The former Test lock got to his feet and towered over the diminutive 19-year-old hooker.

But despite giving away nearly 15kg in weight and 24cm in height, Romelo stood his ground and went toe-to-toe with his big-name opponent.

"Waterhouse just got up from the tackle and they just sort of looked at one another for a split second," the onlooker said.

"Then it was on for young and old. The kid (Romelo) didn't take a backward step either."

Other team mates rushed in to separate the brawling pair, while Elliott reportedly extended them both an invitation to "finish it out the back and then return to training."

The coach did not return our call last night.

Panthers general manager Mick Leary confirmed the altercation had taken place, but was satisfied the pair had resolved their differences. He said no action would be taken against either player.

"It's just that time of the year where the boys are itchy to play and I suppose you could say there were a few frustrations," Leary said.

"From the report I received, there was a bit of push and shove between Trent and Joel but they've now sorted it out."

In brighter news for the Panthers, the club is the equal favourite, with St George Illawarra, to snare Todd Carney to a long-term deal from the 2010 season onwards. It is understood the banished former Canberra Raiders playmaker will make a bid to play for the NSW Cup feeder side of whatever NRL club he joins.

Romelo graduates to NRL for Penrith
GREGOR MACTAGGART
May 8th, 2009

TERRITORY rugby league now has three current players in the NRL competition after Joel Romelo made his first grade debut for Penrith last Saturday night.

The 20-year-old former University and Nightcliff junior made nine tackles during an action-packed 13-minute cameo in the Panthers 18-10 win over Canberra in the nation's capital.

Romelo joins Newcastle Knights and NSW Country winger James McManus and Melbourne Storm centre Will Chambers as Territory exports in the world's toughest rugby league competition.

His debut got under the guard in some ways as Romelo came into the side as a late replacement for injured fullback Lachlan Coote.

"I trained with the first grade squad during the week after being told I was 18th man, but when Lachlan got ruled out Matty (coach Matthew Elliott) told me I was in the 17," Romelo told the Northern Territory News from Sydney.

The classy hooker was proud to play his part in what was a special win for the club, with the Panthers moving into the top eight for the first time.

"It was great to be involved, especially because Penrith hadn't beaten Canberra in four years and Matty used to coach the Raiders," he said.

"The biggest difference between Toyota Cup (where Romelo has been a star for the past 18 months) and the NRL is the pace, its just so fast because everyone is so much fitter and tougher."

Romelo labelled Elliott and Panthers assistant Steve Georgallis among his greatest influences and is hopeful of retaining his spot in the Panthers 17 when they return from this week's bye to play Cronulla at home on Saturday week.

That would be a poignant clash considering Romelo was first signed by the Sharks before crossing to Penrith at the start of 2008.

"Penrith's been fantastic to me since I came over from Cronulla - Steve was an enormous influence on me with the Toyota Cup team and Matty is a great coach as well," he said.

"Hopefully I can get a full-time deal, but right now I'm just concentrating on playing every game I can."

Romelo is the son of former Nightcliff coach Joe Romelo, who led the Dragons to four consecutive DRL A-grade premierships between 1999 and 2002, before moving interstate to support Joel's NRL aspirations.

It was a move that reaped the richest rewards when Romelo first stepped onto Canberra Stadium last Saturday night and sealed Joel's place in history as another proud Territory rugby league product.

Romelo finally gets to start for Bulldogs
GREGOR MACTAGGART
July 1st, 2010

TERRITORY rugby league export Joel Romelo has forced his way into the Canterbury Bulldogs starting side for Saturday night's NRL clash against the Cronulla Sharks.

The 21-year-old has capitalised on the enforced absence of regular hooker Michael Ennis due to NSW Origin commitments to get the nod from coach Kevin Moore for the Round 17 clash at Gosford's Bluetongue Stadium.

It will be Romelo's debut start at the top level, with his previous six first-grade appearances coming from the bench, including three for the Bulldogs since crossing to the club from Penrith in May.

Romelo is the only change to the Bulldogs side which defeated Canberra 18-10 in the nation's capital on Monday night.

In more league news, Territorian Kieran Whalley will play in the curtain-raiser to the third Origin at ANZ Stadium on Tuesday night.

Whalley was named as a starting prop for the XXXX Queensland Residents team, who take on their NSW counterparts in Sydney.

The 23-year-old has been in superb form for Queensland Cup leaders Souths Logan Magpies this season and was a standout in City's 20-12 loss to Country in Gympie last weekend.

The Maroons residents team features a number of players with NRL experience including Steve Michaels, Donald Malone and Clint Amos.

And the Northern Territory missed a spot in the Pool B final of the national under-15 schoolboys championships following a 30-14 loss to Victoria in Canberra yesterday.
