I’d be interested to see his “tackle bust” stats from last year compared to this year (up to rnd 14 and allowing for these annoying extra bye rounds).
2022
Full season - 74 @ 3.5 per game
1st 14 rounds - 33 @ 3.3 per game

2023
1st 14 rounds - 34 @ 2.8 per game

But it does all come down to how tackle busts are recorded... apparently got 5 on Saturday, mostly from crabbing across the field.

Yep, I think it's a pretty useless stat a lot of the time.

The crabbing is due to not being able to run over people anymore

Thanks @MrDravid

When comparing same players stats over 2 seasons, I’d suggest its still a true and fair comparison (even with the crabbing as he was likely crabbing last season too).

So based on that theory, Ramien is down 0.5 tackle busts per game which isn’t insignificant

I like our centres I feel we have the perfect mix
Sifa is big and fast with nice hands and is just adjusting to playing centre in defence
With his biggest problem is moyza leaving him isolated in D all the time but get good ball off Nicko and Willy due to the preference passing by most players

Ramien is everything you would hate to play against as a centre
Big fast strong tough and aggressive his D is great with early ball is a nightmare for teams

I think staggs gave sifa lots of issues with space around him but sifa gave him just as many as well

And Ramien was all over Herbie who stat wise is one of the most dominating centres in the competition

I feel like sometimes we get lost in what we don’t sometimes
I know one thing for sure I love that they in our team

Someone please compare Ramien's defensive stats 2022 vs. 2023 season thus far

My theory about the slimming down was to improve his agility and lateral defense. I think he's looked a better defender for it but his defense was getting better last season anyway.

Would be good to see supporting stats

Another potential part of it was that we already had a bulldozer type chunky centre on the other side of the field so view was to turn Ramien into a more pacey option on the right side. BUT he hasn't gained much pace and he has lost one of his best attributes which was being hard to handle in the tackle.

There are still signs of him bumping off other players but he is relying on a fend alot more and it isn't consistent as with his previous body shape.

Not necessarily disagreeing Gards, but his D stats could also be better due to another preseason and greater work over that extra period.
So for me anyway, I’m not necessarily convinced that there is a direct correlation with him improving in D due to him slimming down.

I also acknowledge that the same could be said about his tackle breaks but I would suggest that his size would be more likely to have an impact on that stat with his smaller frame. Just IMHO thou…

Yea it's hard to prove correlation vs. causation either way but it's just a theory I have that it was to make defense a bit easier on him as surely the club would have been quite happy with his offense last season but then why didn't Sifa get a similar make over as he still struggles in defense so yea I dunno.

Maybe some fitness/injury niggles and losing some weight was to help Jesse manage it better.

The problem is that he really needed to lose 4 kilos. 10 is too many, while 2 wouldn't have been too few.

15 was certainly out of the question. Putting on weight, equally so.

7 was considered. As was 6.

5 was muttered from the back of the room but quickly dismissed.

Missed tackles
2022 - 57 @ 2.7 per game

2023 - 21 @ 1.75 per game

But then again there is a missed tackle when you get bumped off by a guy crabbing cross field and there is a missed tackle where you get run over and concede a line break.

(Once again using FoxSports stats cos I'm lazy)

Sounds like a bastardised version of the holy hand grenade...

And he still has half a season to go so he is on target for 15000m!

So if the boys turn him sideways, does that mean he will crab all the way to the tryline?
Reminds me of the old joke about the racehorse who keeps veering off track and running to his left.

Special consultant comes in and says the solution is to insert several small ball-bearings in the horse’s right ear.

… with a shotgun.
