Young Shark a star in the making

Cronulla five-eighth Jake Walsh used Round 12 to deliver the best Toyota Cup debut I’ve seen. I had to keep checking the statistics to make sure the game against Melbourne in Melbourne was in fact his first in the Under 20’s. It was. Every time I looked.

Walsh, on scholarship from Cootamundra, jumped high to catch a bomb for the Sharks' first try before playing a key role in several more. Even during a break in play, he was front and centre in the team huddle barking instructions.

Not bad for a player who had just made the significant step up from SG Ball. In fact the Sharks promoted six SG Ball players and have used five already.

I can't say any more then WOW! This bloke was just amazing we should be locking him up for a while. Another junior coming through the ranks that looks VERY promising.

Had a great debut, lets not get carried away though.

I am more impressed with Townsend! He has proven himself over a couple of years now. :cheers

Walsh is from Coota, Eather is a Tamworth/surrounds boy.

Tbh, while I thought Walsh had a good game, I think that piece by Russell is a bit over-hyped. He came down with a bomb for a try and had some composed touches out wide, but it was mostly the quality of the coaching that had him looking so good. Also, when Townsend went off the field Walsh took over and we started to struggle.

Young for that age group and will improve though.

Rubbish. The forwards just got dominated in that last 10 minutes when Townsend went off and Walsh still held his own.

He was awesome, picture perfect passes and the best attacking kicking game I've seen for quite some time.

Was very happy with his debut and excited by the prospect that he will only get better. Hope we can keep him long-term.

What- the forwards decided to throw in the towel at exactly the moment Chad went off? Bit of a coincidence don't you think? It was a procession up until then- once he went off we were out scored about 3 tries to 1.

Good option taking, good execution, but little individual brilliance- yet. Don't hype the kid just for the sake of it.

Agreed ABS,

We don't want to put any expectation on the kid too early.

Random Fact: Cootamundra was where Sir Don Bradman was born. He turned out to be pretty good hey? Cootamundra, Wagga and the Riverina region produces its fair share of sporting superstars. Something in the water I suppose.

Who was playing at five-eighth previous to Walsh? Wasn't it Maurice Blair?

Also how old is Walsh?
