JACK Bosden always thought he would push for a first grade spot: he just didn't think it would come with St George Illawarra.
Bosden, a Cronulla Caringbah junior, quit the Sharks in the lead-up to last season with a year still to run on his contract.
It looked as though a NRL start had passed him by before he linked with former
Illawarra Steelers great Paul McGregor, who coached Wests in the Illawarra Carlton League.
"It was good to get back and to enjoy my footy again,'' Bosden said.
"I'd been at Cronulla since I was about 14 or 15. I wasn't really happy at the joint so I left. I got a bit stale.''
McGregor's obvious links with the Dragons prompted a phone call from St George Illawarra assistant coach Steve Price who asked Bosden to join the club.
He has been training with the club since August but is on the mend from shoulder reconstruction surgery.
"Cronulla was good, don't get me wrong, but I'm enjoying this season a bit more,'' Bosden, who still lives in Sutherland Shire, said.
"It's bit more professional and I think I'm a bit older and a bit wiser.''
Bosden was boosted by the fact the Dragons offered him a two-year deal. He is expected to resume full contact training with the side early this year.
"[Wayne Bennett] is good and very easy to talk to,'' Bosden said.
"He wanted to know what happened at Cronulla and what my reasons for leaving were. He is very approachable.
"I'm just looking at getting back on the paddock and getting some footy under my belt. If I'm playing well then I'm a chance of playing first grade.''
